The Congress’ top leadership is reportedly focussing on the party’s General Secretary and Alappuzha MP KC Venugopal for the position of United Democratic Front (UDF) leader and Kerala Chief Minister. While Venugopal has emerged as a primary contender in high-command discussions, the move faces potential resistance from State leaders, including outgoing Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala. Despite public restraint, both leaders maintain claims to the top post based on legislative seniority and political standing.

The selection process highlights a long-standing internal debate within the Congress regarding leadership criteria. The party high command appears to be prioritising legislative consensus and organisational hierarchy over individual mass appeal. Supporters of this approach suggest that legislators are more likely to support a candidate with significant standing in the party’s central leadership.

However, Venugopal’s potential elevation presents logistical hurdles. If selected, the move would necessitate two by-elections: one for the Assembly seat, he have to contest and win to remain Chief Minister, and another to fill his current Lok Sabha seat in Alappuzha. This contradicts the party’s previous guideline against fielding sitting MPs in State Assembly elections.

final decision

On Monday, the Congress high command summoned former presidents of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to New Delhi for emergency consultations. The meeting was called to resolve competing factional claims and reach a consensus on the succession. A final decision is expected to be deferred by at least 24 hours as talks continue.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the second-largest constituent of the UDF, expressed formal dissatisfaction on Monday regarding the delay in naming a Chief Minister. Senior IUML leaders reportedly conveyed their concerns to the Congress leadership, stating that the lack of clarity is creating restlessness among party cadres and voters following the coalition’s recent electoral victory.

UDF partners have indicated that prolonged indecision in New Delhi could impact the political momentum gained from their mandate.
