
























Nifty Bank began today’s session with a gap-down at 54,646 versus last week’s close of 55,913. It is now trading at 54,850, down 1.9 per cent.
All 14 stocks in the Nifty Bank index are down today. Union Bank of India (down 3.9 per cent) and State Bank of India (down 3 per cent) are the top losers.
Nifty PSU Bank has lost 2.9 per cent, whereas Nifty Private Bank is down 1.9 per cent. Therefore, the public sector banks are facing greater selling pressure.
Nifty Bank futures
The April expiry Nifty Bank futures opened today’s session lower at 55,310 versus Friday’s close of 56,077. It is now hovering around 55,000, down 1.9 per cent.
Although the market breadth and the decline in the first hour of today’s trade indicates weakness, there is a support for Nifty Bank futures at 54,600, which has held well in its first test.
If the support at 54,600 can stay valid and Nifty Bank futures can rise above 55,400, the intraday trend can turn positive. In such a case, the contract can make a quick upmove to 56,000. Resistance above 56,000 is at 56,500.
But in case the bears drag Nifty Bank futures below 54,600, it can open the door for a further decline. Notable support levels below 54,600 can be spotted at 53,800 and 53,500.
Trade strategy
Stay on the sidelines for now. Buy Nifty Bank futures (April) if it breaks out of 55,400. Target and stop-loss can be 56,000 and 55,000 respectively.
