Insurance Query: Travel Insurance For International Students
By Chandrakant Said · 2026-04-19 · via Wealth management, Investment World, Investment, Stocks, Money, Insurance, Bonds | The HinduBusinessLine

Q. What are the key risks international students face while studying abroad, and how can student travel insurance help them manage these challenges? - Susan

A. International students often encounter travel disruptions such as flight delays, missed connections, lost or delayed baggage, and unexpected medical issues while studying abroad. Operational challenges at airports, weather-related disruptions, and changes in travel schedules can also affect itineraries, leading to additional expenses.

Comprehensive student travel insurance is designed to address many of these situations by providing both financial protection and practical assistance. Depending on the plan, students may receive support for medical emergencies overseas, reimbursement for certain travel delays, help in locating lost baggage, or assistance with travel document issues. The goal is to ensure that students are safeguarded against unexpected challenges during their academic journey abroad.

Many student travel insurance policies include benefits that cover trip delays, missed connections, or interruptions, provided certain conditions outlined in the policy are met. If a delay exceeds the waiting period specified in the plan, students may be eligible for reimbursement of reasonable additional expenses, non-refundable accommodation costs, travel ticket expenses, or alternate transportation arrangements required to continue their journey. In cases where a student misses a connecting flight due to an earlier delay, some policies also provide support for rebooking costs or other necessary travel adjustments.

Travel insurance can also play an important role when students face challenges such as lost baggage or misplaced travel documents while abroad. Many comprehensive student policies provide compensation for lost or delayed baggage and offer assistance in tracking or reporting missing luggage during the trip.

Similarly, if a passport or important travel document is lost abroad, insurers often provide guidance on the steps required to obtain replacement documents, including coordinating with local authorities or embassies where necessary. Typically, comprehensive policies may also reimburse certain expenses associated with obtaining duplicate or new passport.

Student travel insurance plans are increasingly designed to go beyond standard travel coverage and address the specific vulnerabilities associated with pursuing education overseas. Two notable benefits are Study Interruption and Sponsor Protection.

Study Interruption coverage reimburses tuition fees paid in advance if a student’s studies are interrupted due to medical or compassionate reasons in case of the death of a family member. This is particularly valuable given the significant investment in tuition.

Sponsor Protection, on the other hand, covers the remaining school fees up to a specified limit in the event of the accidental death or permanent disablement of the student’s financial sponsor. For many Indian students whose education abroad is funded by a sole earning family member, this benefit can mean the difference between continuing their studies and being forced to return home.

Most student travel insurance plans cover individuals between the ages of 16 and 35 who are enrolling in and attending a full-time registered educational institution of higher learning outside India. Verifying these criteria before purchasing is essential. Beyond eligibility, students should carefully evaluate the depth of coverage. Some variants also provide specialised extensions such as coverage for mental and nervous disorders (including those related to alcohol consumption and drug addiction), as well as physiotherapy.

Finally, ease of claims and access to assistance matter just as much as the coverage itself. Several educational institutions now require students to have travel insurance as a condition for obtaining a visa or confirming admission, making it not only a smart financial decision but in many cases, a mandatory one.
