The next generation of Databricks Genie
2026-04-27 · via Databricks

Today, we are excited to introduce the next generation of Genie. The new Genie can answer questions beyond the boundaries of a Genie Space, connect to enterprise knowledge sources like Google Drive and Sharepoint, and combine structured and unstructured data to generate insights. Genie now includes all capabilities previously known as Databricks One, marking a significant shift in how business users engage with the platform. Along with account-level access and native iOS and Android apps, Genie is becoming the primary way users experience Databricks - available anytime, anywhere.

Accurate responses without upfront modeling

Natural language analytics is now widely accessible, but delivering accurate, consistent answers remains a challenge. When Databricks entered this space, we chose not to build another error-prone text-to-SQL interface. Instead, we introduced Genie Spaces: curated experiences where teams apply guardrails to the AI, including dedicated knowledge stores, benchmarking, and verified metric logic for specific domains. Customers embraced this approach, creating over 1.5M Genie Spaces in 2026 alone. As adoption grew, they asked for a way to bring these experiences together without sacrificing trust.

The new Genie does exactly this. From a single chat interface, it draws on the most relevant and trusted assets, including certified Genie Spaces, governed dashboards, and Databricks Apps, reusing the logic already embedded there. It relies on the same business logic your analysts and engineers have vetted, with metadata guiding routing so higher-trust sources take priority. This means you don’t need new context layers or lengthy model buildouts to get high-quality results. Genie builds on the logic your business has developed over years.

Genie's new unified chat interface

The new Genie is powered by the latest reasoning models and new agent architecture, enhancing its ability to answer complex and open-ended questions. This is most evident when you tackle questions that span multiple data domains.

The most profound aspect of Genie’s unified chat is its agentic reasoning. It doesn't just find assets, it synthesizes distant, non-obvious relationships across the entire ecosystem in a way that is nothing short of astounding — Anthony Taylor, Data Engineer at Arthrex

Connecting to enterprise systems and knowledge stores

We know much of the context, especially higher-level business knowledge, lives in unstructured sources like Google Docs, SharePoint, and other enterprise systems. That’s why we’ve now added built-in connectors and support for MCP connections in Genie. This enables Genie to access these sources and take actions that connect insight to execution. All connections are managed through the Unity Catalog AI Gateway, ensuring they’re simple to use and well governed.

Genie now connects to different structured and unstructured sources

A globally unified home for business users

AI is bringing data closer to every business user, but access remains fragmented. Users still have to know where to go, and agents operate with siloed views that limit their effectiveness. This model no longer works.

Last year, we introduced Databricks One, a streamlined experience that helps business users access dashboards, apps, and Genie in one place.  Uptake of the product has been tremendous.

We’ve brought these concepts into Genie and removed the final barrier to simple access by eliminating the Databricks workspace boundary, creating a global home for Databricks. This experience now replaces Databricks One. To maintain compatibility for existing users, we’ve kept the /one URL, providing a single front door for data and AI.

For many teams, Genie is quickly becoming the default interface for business users.

By combining Premier’s curated, AI-ready data with the Databricks platform, Genie lets even non-technical users dive into our data and ask questions in everyday language without missing a beat. In one place, users can get answers that are backed by transparent, risk‑adjusted data. This means teams can pinpoint improvement opportunities quickly, turning insights into action. — Tim Riddle, Senior Product Director, Premier Inc

Creating a true home for business users requires more than aggregating assets. It must be intuitive, easy to navigate, and abstract away underlying complexity. To support this, the new Genie experience also offers:

  • Automated identity management keeps access continuously in sync via Entra and Okta
  • Domains group assets by business concept (e.g. supply chain or marketing), not by workspace
  • Custom URLs provide a single, memorable entry point like mycompany.databricks.com
  • Unified login removes friction as users move across workspaces, which now scale to more than 100,000 users
  • Unity Catalog ensures consistent governance across the entire experience
  • Business semantics to power assets and Genie’s unified chat with trusted metric definitions

With this foundation, Genie becomes the one place business users go to find, understand, and use data, without needing to know how it’s organized behind the scenes.

Data and AI on every device

Genie’s mission is to make data, AI, and insights accessible to every employee, but a desktop-only experience doesn’t reach most of them. Retail associates, clinicians, field teams, and leaders on the move all work away from a laptop. For this reason, we are excited to introduce a native mobile app for Genie on iOS and Android.

The full Genie experience is now on your phone, including dashboards , apps, and chat, powered by the same governed data and logic. Users get the same trusted answers wherever they are. This enables business users to get answers in the moment, wherever they work.

Genie is coming to iOS and Android soon via native apps
