System Check Results: Selecting Microcontrollers

It seems microcontroller (MCU) selection isn’t a constant activity for many design teams; instead, it is a recurring part of the development cycle. About half of respondents (48%) said they select microcontrollers several times per year, while another 32% do so occasionally. About 11% make these decisions monthly, which suggests that many engineers are working on longer product-dev cycles rather than rapidly changing platforms. Very few respondents never face MCU selection decisions, indicating just how important microcontrollers remain to the design process.

When it comes to choosing microcontrollers, development ecosystem and software tools dominate the decision-making process, cited by 46% of respondents — more than double the importance of wireless integration, low-power operation, or raw processing performance. Factors such as price and availability remain significant factors at 21%. Engineers increasingly value productivity and support infrastructure over datasheet specs alone. A strong ecosystem, proven development tools, and accessible documentation can accelerate development, reduce risk, and ultimately matter more than squeezing out a few extra MIPS or milliamps.
