Kontron has launched a new managed Ethernet switch aimed at defense platforms that need deterministic, high-bandwidth communications in harsh operating environments.
The CERES-TSN combines time-sensitive networking (TSN), advanced security features and up to 66Gbps switching performance in a compact fanless design. The switch is targeted at embedded networking applications in ground vehicles and naval systems, with potential use in avionics platforms as well.
The launch highlights the growing role of TSN technology in military and aerospace networks, where real-time data exchange and secure communications are becoming increasingly important. It also reflects the ongoing demand for European-designed infrastructure that avoids export restrictions and long-term supply chain uncertainties.
The CERES-TSN supports up to 28 fully managed Layer 2/3 ports, including as many as 24 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and four 10GbE optical links using rugged 38999-type connectors. At its core is Microchip’s LAN9696TSN switch fabric, providing line-rate forwarding performance of up to 66Gbps.
A key feature is support for IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol and IEEE 802.1AS standards, enabling deterministic low-latency communications across distributed systems. This capability is increasingly required in applications such as sensor fusion, high-resolution video transmission and rapid threat detection.
Kontron sees the switch being deployed in combat vehicle networks, C4I and C4ISR architectures, naval systems, avionics platforms, tactical communications equipment and data acquisition systems.
The platform also supports IPv4 and IPv6 routing, multicast traffic management, quality of service (QoS), VLANs and network redundancy. Management options include SNMP, command-line interface access and a web-based graphical user interface.
Security features include HTTPS, SSH and IEEE 802.1X network access control, while secure boot functionality is available on request. An optional PoE+ capability allows connected devices such as cameras and sensors to be powered directly through the network, reducing cabling requirements and simplifying system integration.
Designed for demanding military environments, the conduction-cooled switch complies with MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-461F requirements. It operates between -40°C and +55°C, with an extended-temperature version available up to +71°C. The unit is housed in an IP65-rated enclosure for protection against dust and water ingress.
Kontron emphasized that the platform is designed and manufactured in Europe and is both ITAR- and BAFA-free. The company also highlighted its fully controlled development approach, avoiding reliance on third-party modules and helping to streamline qualification processes for safety-critical systems.
“The CERES-TSN brings together deterministic networking, high performance and strong security in a compact rugged design. It helps customers build reliable, future-ready network infrastructures while reducing costs and time to market,” said Sébastien Vitre, Product Manager, Rugged Systems at Kontron.
The CERES-TSN is available immediately in a 28-port configuration, with a second variant scheduled for release later this year. Kontron will demonstrate the switch at the upcoming Eurosatory 2026 exhibition in Paris from June 15-19.
