Curious about the results from the System Check on the topic of wireless protocols? We asked Elektor and eeNews Europe community to reflect on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, LoRa/LoRaWAN, Zigbee/Thread, and Cellular (LTE/5G/NB-IoT). Consder the results.

System Check Results: Wireless Protocols

Respondents are still relying on Wi-Fi in their current designs. Nearly half of them identify it as the wireless protocol they use most often.

Zigbee/Thread and LoRa/LoRaWAN form a strong second tier, reflecting sustained demand for low-power mesh networking and long-range IoT connectivity solutions. Bluetooth LE continues to be used for short-range applications and wearables or consumer designs. Cellular IoT technologies (e.g., LTE-M and NB-IoT) currently occupy a smaller share of active development work among respondents.

Looking forward, the growth outlook shifts toward industrial IoT networking technologies. Respondents indicate that Zigbee/Thread and LoRa/LoRaWAN are the fastest-growing wireless solutions, which signals strong momentum for scalable sensor networks, smart infrastructure, and low-power distributed systems. Wi-Fi remains a solid growth outlook, especially as newer standards improve performance and efficiency. But respondents seem to expect specialized IoT protocols to drive the next generation of industrial connectivity solutions. Many expect Bluetooth LE and Cellular IoT to expand, although at a more moderate pace compared to mesh and long-range IoT technologies.
