Siemens expands rail technology portfolio with MERMEC acquisition

News |

By Asma Adhimi

Siemens Mobility is expanding its rail technology footprint in Europe with the acquisition of several key businesses from Italy’s MERMEC Group. The move strengthens Siemens’ capabilities in railway signaling, diagnostics and measurement systems, while also giving the company a larger industrial base in Italy.

The deal, expected to close by the end of 2026 pending regulatory approvals, comes as rail operators across Europe push ahead with network modernization, predictive maintenance and digital infrastructure upgrades.

The acquisition highlights growing investment in intelligent rail infrastructure and the increasing role of diagnostics, analytics and automation in transport systems. It also underlines how industrial technology groups are consolidating expertise around digital rail operations and asset intelligence.

Focus on diagnostics and signaling

Siemens Mobility said the acquisition will significantly expand its global diagnostics portfolio, particularly through MERMEC’s inspection technologies, measurement trains and analytics platforms. The transaction also strengthens Siemens’ signaling business, especially in the Italian mainline rail market.

“By combining MERMEC’s technological expertise and market access with Siemens Mobility’s global presence and technology leadership, we are strengthening our capabilities in diagnostics, asset-intelligence and signaling capabilities. This step expands our industrial footprint in Italy within our world-leading signaling business and significantly enhances our global diagnostics portfolio,” said Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility.

The companies say customers will benefit from a broader diagnostics offering that combines Siemens’ onboard and depot-based asset intelligence systems with MERMEC’s railway inspection vehicles and infrastructure monitoring software. The aim is to create a scalable diagnostics and analytics platform with global reach through Siemens Mobility’s installed customer base.

The acquisition also supports Siemens’ long-term strategy in rail infrastructure, where demand is increasing for digital signaling systems, automated inspection and predictive maintenance technologies.

Italy becomes a strategic hub

As part of the transaction, MERMEC’s sites and workforce will become part of Siemens Mobility’s global operations. The Ferrosud facility in Matera is expected to become an industrial hub for next-generation rail diagnostics technologies.

Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Monopoli, MERMEC operates in signaling, electrification, diagnostics and digital asset analytics for rail networks. The businesses included in the deal employ around 1,700 people and generated roughly €430m in revenue in fiscal year 2025, serving customers in more than 70 countries.

The agreement excludes several MERMEC investments, including Angelstar, Compagnie des Signaux and MERMEC Deutschland.

“Formally, I have been retired for nine months; at present, my health is not at its best, and my children are pursuing their own independent paths with their companies. For this reason, I sought a very solid group in the sector, in order to guarantee a secure future for my valued colleagues, who have contributed to making MERMEC the company it is today, wherever they may be. Becoming part of Siemens will offer them a global environment, strongly focused on innovation and sustainable growth,” said Vito Pertosa, President of Angelo Holding.
