ABB launches IP66 industrial drives for harsh environments

News |

By Asma Adhimi

ABB has expanded its industrial drive portfolio with new IP66 / UL Type 4X variants designed for harsh operating environments, targeting applications ranging from food processing and water treatment to rooftop HVAC systems.

The new versions of the ACS580 General Purpose, ACH580 HVACR and ACQ580 Water & Wastewater drives are built to handle rain, salt spray, humidity, dust, chemical exposure and washdown conditions without requiring additional protective enclosures. ABB says the move responds to growing demand for more resilient motor control systems that can simplify installations and reduce overall system costs.

For eeNews Europe readers working in industrial automation, building systems and infrastructure, the announcement highlights a broader trend toward more distributed and ruggedized power electronics. The new drives also underline how suppliers are integrating connectivity and safety features directly into motor control platforms.

Built for outdoor and washdown environments

ABB says the IP66-rated drives can deliver energy savings of up to 25% while maintaining reliable operation in environments where standard drives would typically require extra cabinet protection.

“The introduction of these IP66 / UL Type 4X variants marks a significant step forward in making efficiency and productivity accessible across a much wider range of environments and industrial demands,” said Prachi Nayak, Regional Product Market Manager Drive Products, ABB. “These drives are built to perform where conditions are toughest, and we’re proud to be extending the reach of our all-compatible portfolio to meet that challenge.”

The ACS580 variants are aimed at food & beverage and agricultural applications including dairy processing, bakeries, meat processing and aquaculture, where frequent cleaning and chemical exposure are common. The ACQ580 models target water and wastewater infrastructure such as clarifiers, pump stations and dosing systems exposed to corrosive gases and chemicals.

Meanwhile, the ACH580 range extends the same protection level to HVACR installations including rooftop air handlers, cooling towers and outdoor ventilation systems.

Bluetooth commissioning and flexible connectivity

A key feature of the new drives is an optional Bluetooth control panel that supports remote commissioning and monitoring through ABB’s Drivetune and Drive Composer software tools. ABB says the wireless access allows operators to stay outside the arc flash boundary during live work, improving maintenance safety.

The drives also integrate a built-in C2 EMC filter, optimized DC choke and two expansion slots for fieldbus adapters and additional I/O modules, giving system integrators more flexibility when connecting to industrial networks and automation systems.

The launch further expands ABB’s all-compatible drive platform, which is designed to provide a common user interface and software environment across different application sectors and environmental ratings. The new IP66 / Type 4X drives are available across a broad range of power ratings for industrial and infrastructure deployments.
