Advantech is adding Intel Core Series 3 processors to its industrial embedded boards and edge AI systems, aiming to support lightweight edge AI inference in space- and power-constrained applications.
The move gives eeNews Europe readers a useful view of how mainstream processor platforms are being adapted for practical AI workloads at the edge, including retail, healthcare and industrial automation systems.
Intel Core Series 3 is built on Intel 18A process technology and uses a hybrid CPU design with up to six cores, combining two Performance-cores and four Efficient-cores. Advantech says the platform delivers up to 1.2 times higher single-thread performance than previous-generation processors.
The processor also integrates an Xe3 graphics engine and Intel NPU 5.0, enabling AI workloads to be distributed across the CPU, GPU and NPU. The combined architecture can reach up to 40 TOPS of AI performance, which potentially supports local inference without relying on cloud processing for every workload.
For industrial developers, the dedicated NPU is the key addition. It is intended to handle always-on edge AI inference more efficiently, while the CPU and GPU remain available for control, visualization and general computing tasks.
“Edge AI is increasingly moving toward practical inference workloads at the edge, where efficiency and balance are key to scalable deployment,” said Miller Chang, President of Advantech Embedded Sector. “By working closely with Intel, we are delivering efficient and balanced systems that enable customers to deploy lightweight edge AI inference applications with greater speed and operational efficiency.”
Advantech plans to introduce several Intel Core Series 3-based products from April 2026. These include the MIO-5356 embedded single-board computer, the ARK-1252 DIN-rail edge computer and the ARK-2233 fanless edge computer.
The systems are positioned for applications such as smart retail kiosks, self-checkout terminals, healthcare assistance devices and industrial robotics. These use cases typically need responsive local processing, predictable operation and long service life.
Advantech says the architecture supports up to 10 years of product availability, which is relevant for industrial equipment makers that need longer design-in cycles than consumer markets usually allow. The processors also support Intel Time Coordinated Computing and Time-Sensitive Networking, potentially helping automation and control systems that require more deterministic performance.
