AI data center infrastructure drives Pennsylvania energy expansion

AI data center infrastructure projects are driving major energy investments as hyperscale operators expand power capacity for artificial intelligence workloads. UGI Energy Services and Prime Data Centers are partnering on a major natural gas infrastructure project in Pennsylvania. The project will support one of the state’s largest planned AI and high-performance computing campuses. 

The companies plan to develop dedicated gas infrastructure and an on site electricity generation facility. The project reflects how hyperscale operators are increasingly seeking long-term energy resilience as AI workloads continue to grow.

For eeNews Europe readers, the development is particularly relevant because European markets face similar challenges around grid capacity, energy resilience, and data center power demand. Several AI infrastructure projects across Europe are also exploring alternative energy supply strategies as utilities struggle to keep pace with rising electricity consumption.

AI workloads increase energy demand

Under the agreement, UGI Energy Services will sell land to Prime Data Centers for the planned facility. However, UGI will retain underground gas storage capacity and oil and gas rights associated with the property. The company said its planned investment could exceed $100 million.

Prime expects natural gas demand to exceed 100,000 dekatherms per day within three to five years. As a result, the project could become one of the region’s largest energy developments connected to AI and hyperscale computing infrastructure.

“This is a significant milestone for UGI Energy Services and a strong fit for our midstream capabilities, where we anticipate that our planned investment could be in excess of $100 million. We’re proud to partner with Prime Data Centers, and as energy demands continue to grow, the northern tier’s direct access to locally produced natural gas and multiple interstate pipeline systems makes this a well-positioned project. We look forward to helping power what will be a landmark investment for Pennsylvania,” said Joseph Hartz, President, UGI Energy Services.

Energy resilience becomes critical

Prime Data Centers said Pennsylvania’s northern tier offers direct access to Marcellus Shale gas reserves alongside established pipeline infrastructure. The company currently operates or plans 28 data centers across the US and Europe, representing four gigawatts of operational and planned capacity.

Together, we are building the energy backbone that will power the next generation of AI and high-performance computing in Pennsylvania,” said Nicholas Laag, Chief Executive Officer, Prime Data Centers.

The companies also pointed to major interstate pipeline systems, including Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage and Tennessee Gas Pipeline, as key advantages for ensuring continuous energy supply for future hyperscale AI operations.
