System check! Should engineers learn analog, even if they focus on digital? What do you think is the best way to learn analog electronics? Please give us your opinion.
In a recent System Check, we asked community members about dev boards and whether they lead to laziness. Here are the results.
Based on the poll questions, learned that that most Elektor readers don’t see dev boards as making engineers “lazy.” More than 40% say dev boards accelerate learning, while another approximately 22% believe their impact depends on how they’re used. About 18% view them as slightly abstracting but still helpful, and only a minority (around 8%) think they introduce too much abstraction. Enthusiasm remains solid, with approximately 12% simply saying they love dev boards.
In terms of skills at risk, it seems most of our community members are concerned about circuit design fundamentals. Some also worry about losing the habit of reading datasheets (about 15%) or low-level debugging (around 9%), but these are secondary.
Almost 25% of respondents believe no real skills are lost at all, reinforcing the idea that dev boards are helpful tools provided engineers, students, and makers stay knowledgeable of the underlying hardware.
