Meta blocks YSRCP page; the rising political censorship in AP
Azdhan · 2026-06-15 · via MEDIANAMA

“After the takedown of our official Instagram handle earlier this year, the official YSRCP Facebook page has now been made inaccessible in India,” wrote Andhra Pradesh ex-CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on X after Meta had geo-restricted the opposition party’s Facebook page, “YSR Congress Party – YSRCP”

“YSR Congress Party – YSRCP” Facebook page is accessible through a VPN. Access here: [ URL ]

Meta complied with blocking orders: The screenshots posted by Jagan state that Meta complied with the blocking orders as per the orders from “The Government of India / Law Enforcement,” Tagging Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, MeitY, Meta and Amit Shah and PM Modi. He also said:

  • “We will challenge these unfair actions through every legal and constitutional avenue. No intimidation, censorship, or misuse of institutions can silence the voice of the people.”
  • “This is not just an attack on YSRCP; it is an attack on democratic values and freedom of expression. … Silencing an opposition party’s official handles, thereby opposition voices for speaking the truth sets a dangerous precedent and is most undemocratic.”
  • “The @ncbn government continues to suppress the voices of the people and the opposition.”
  • “We demand the immediate restoration of the official page in the interest of democracy and to uphold the constitutional spirit.”

MediaNama couldn’t locate the URLs of these posts when we accessed the “YSR Congress Party – YSRCP” FB page using a VPN. The page is accessible through a VPN, but these particular posts are missing from its feed. These posts may have been deleted by YSRCP or taken down by Meta, possibly in compliance with AP Police orders.

Similarly, AP police attempted to block news about Google-Adani’s AI data center. The URls of these posts: [ Post-1 | Post-2 | Post-3 (not accessible) | Post-4 Post-5 | Post-6 ]

UttarandhraNow continues to receive “Legal notices from Andhra Pradesh police via X, demanding removal/deletion of posts related to Andhra Pradesh politics, Press meets, & development…Freedom of speech & press is fundamental. Will continue to highlight issues the state faces with respect  to  governance, law and order without fear. Democracy thrives on open dialogue, not suppression,” wrote the more than a decade-old news and media company.

Following AP ex-CM’s post, several YSRCP-affiliated accounts posted legal notices and/or X’s transparency notice (X sends an email to users whenever the police or an authorised authority issues a takedown or blocking notice). Some of them are:

Naveen YSJ Vizag (@YSJ2024): On June 5, AP’s Inspector of Police of Cyber Analysis Wing in Nellore sent a notice to X under the IT Act’s Section 79(3)(b), invoking hate speech and misinformation provisions against the handle Naveen YSJ Vizag (@YSJ2024). However, X had not complied with AP police’s notice.

The URLs of posts that AP police wanted X to remove/block “immediately”: [ Post-1 | Post-2 | Post-3 | Post-4 | Post-5 | Post-6 ]

Why is AP Police targeting @YSJ2024 X handle? According to the AP police’s notice to X, shared by @YSJ2024 on X, the cyber wing reasoned:

  • Sharing hateful and misleading, defamatory content:  “These profiles have been creating and sharing hateful content targeting leaders of the State of Andhra Pradesh. They have posted and commented on unverified, false, and misleading information regarding the political activities of state leaders. Their statements or actions are questioned by others.
  • Claims of AP government suppressing opposition’s voice: “They claim that the government is attempting to suppress their voices and freedom of the press. They further allege that they are being targeted because they belong to Telangana State and are journalists from another state.”

Citing these reasons, AP police invoked the following BNS sections:

  • “promoting enmity, spreading false or misleading information, and acts prejudicial to public harmony and public order” (Section 196, BNS)
  • “making, publishing, or circulating false statements, rumours, or information that may cause fear, alarm, public mischief, or damage the reputation of the government” (Section 353 BNS)

Similarly, on May 29, the same AP police sent another notice to X regarding the “misinformation about the DSC (District Selection Committee) exam.” You can access the post AP police wanted to remove/block here

_ysrkutumbam: According to @_Ysrkutumbam’s post on X, Meta has geo-blocked at least three reels/videos criticising the current regime. Similarly, several posts on this X account were flagged by AP police. The URLs of these posts are: [ Post-1 | Post-2 | Post-3 | Post-4 | Post-5  (not accessible) ]

Jagananna Connects (@JaganannaCNCTS): X notified this X handle, saying that the following URLs were flagged by AP police for ‘violating Indian law.’ You can see the X’s notices here. These are the URLs of X posts that AP police wanted to remove:  [ Post-1 | Post-2 (not accessible) | Post-3  (not accessible) | Post-4 | Post-5 ]

Praveen Reddy (@MPRAVEENREDDY13): “Even the self-respect of Andhra is also wrong,” reads his post on X while posting the transparency notice from X.

Shiva Mani (@NaperuShivaMani): “In a democracy, it is not possible to intimidate questioning voices with notices. The emails I received are proof of this. Let us all stand united for our rights. Share the notices you received, and raise your voice without fear!” read the English-translated post of Shiva Mani on X while posting the partially visible screenshots of X’s emails regarding the handle @congresskutami.

Captain Fasak 2.0 (@2Captainparody): “CBN is following the same playbook as Revanth Reddy. My 2 Instagram accounts(60K & 100K followers) were suspended due to infringement strikes for using political photos. What started in TG seems to be happening in A.P now. Why so much insecurity when opposition questions gov..?” wrote on X without posting any legal notices.

YS Jagan Times (@YSJaganTimes): At least three reels/videos related to the alleged DSC scam were removed by Meta. You can view Meta’s notice here

YSRCP Europe (@YSRCPEurope): “They’re trying to scare us into silence, but every time we look at that notice, we just feel a deep, aching reminder of why we needed to speak up in the first place,” wrote the YSRCP Europe handle. The URL of the post that AP police wanted to get removed/blocked: [ Post-1 (not accessible) ]

Chengal Reddy (@chengal380): YSRCP student wing president at Chandragiri assembly constituency, Chengal Reddy, posted the transparency notice from X.  The URL of the post that AP police wanted to get removed/blocked: [ Post-1 (not accessible) ]

Shaik Mohammed Afzal (@AfzalShaik_Offl): At least three reels/videos related to the alleged DSC scam were removed by Meta. The notice specifies that it complied with orders from “The Government of India / Law Enforcement,” not AP police specifically.  You can view Meta’s notice here.

Important Read: “Unless the impugned content is shown to have a direct and proximate tendency to incite violence, public disorder or an offence falling within Article 19(2), removal or blocking of such content would amount to impermissible censorship,” said the Madras HC in May 2026.
