Trish · 2026-08-14 · via The Carter Center

ATLANTA (Aug. 13, 2026) — The Carter Center mourns the passing of Ambassador James T. “Jim” Laney, a distinguished diplomat, educator, faith leader, and longtime friend of the Center whose leadership and service advanced peace and understanding around the world.

From the Center’s earliest days, Ambassador Laney helped shape its vision and strengthen its mission to promote peace, preserve democracy, protect human rights, and improve health. He also played a vital role in fostering the enduring partnership between The Carter Center and Emory University.

“Jim Laney embodied the values that define The Carter Center — a commitment to service, a belief in the power of dialogue, and a deep respect for human dignity,” said Jason Carter, chair of the Carter Center Board of Trustees. “His wisdom, integrity, and friendship influenced generations of leaders, and his legacy will continue to inspire our work for years to come.”

We extend our deepest condolences to Ambassador Laney’s family, friends, and colleagues. We are grateful for his extraordinary contributions and will honor his legacy through the continued work of The Carter Center.
