Hello. I’m new to Linux and CachyOS. I’ve been using the OS for a few months but decided to do a fresh install this week to start and am still experiencing what I believe are extra long boot times, at least when compared to Windows. I’d really appreciate some advice on troubleshooting this. Thanks a lot.

Your ‘boot time’ is actually pretty decent… it’s the Firmware (BIOS) that needs attention.
I wouldn’t use fastfetch for system information though - that’s just a viral toy… the tool for the job is inxi… Try running this, then Ctrl-V to paste it in here ![]()
{ echo "[details=\"inxi -zv8\"]"; echo "\`\`\`"; inxi -zv8; echo "\`\`\`"; echo "[/details]"; } | wl-copy
Basically, just paste the contents of ‘inxi -zv8’ in a code block and hide it to save space.
I’ll test it here:
inxi -zv8

haha ok, I just thought you’d edit and replace fastfetch in the first post.
However, I really think your BIOS is where you need to be researching… most of the boot time is firmware, not cachy.

Sorry, also new to posting on this forum. How do I get the text to hide?
I’ll look for issues with my BIOS. It’s probably been 6-12 months since I updated. I know when X670 chipset first released with DDR5 memory there were issues with memory training times, might be something related to that.
sneff30 6
Figured out how to hide code. After enabling Memory Context Restore in BIOS my boot time dropped from the original 53s to 28s.

Any way to reduce this further? My userspace seems to be double what I see other people posting. I’ve selected “None” for the splash screen in system settings but I’m still getting one, so I know that’s eating some time. Would something like the below fix that? There is also nmb.service and plymouth-quit.service eating 10s.
disable splash screen
sudo systemctl mask plymouth-start.service plymouth-quit.service plymouth-quit-wait.service
sudo nano /etc/kernel/cmdline
- Remove quiet and splash kernel parameters
sudo reinstall-kernels
I personally had no use for Plymouth, so that’s gone… so there’s 10s…
it’s been a few years since a boot sequence had time to show much (I used to have a nice ‘beautiful tree’ like a growing green/neon tree).
That’s pretty quick already - I’d just ignore folks showing off ridiculously low figures, because they probably made serious compromises to get there.
Ok, last comment - you can stop doing the mirror update every boot - I’d remove that hook, and then set up a timer to do it every week instead… that’s quite a big time sucker.
Alternatively, you can add a mirror-update command to your abbreviations/alias commands…
sudo cachyos-rate-mirrors
sudo systemctl edit cachyos-rate-mirrors.service
adding this will kill the boot trigger:
[Unit]
ConditionPathExists=!/var/lib/cachyos-mirrorlist.updated
Set up a weekly timer maybe ‘OnCalendar=weekly’ :
systemctl edit --full cachyos-rate-mirrors.timer
nmb.service is for Samba.
Use samba? No?
sudo systemctl edit --full cachyos-rate-mirrors.timer
Let’s know how that works - but now you’ve some remembering/troublshooting to do if you start doing anything with samba 'n stuff.
I generally only do a mirror update when I’m installing a large update.
Oh, and if it’s all good, remember - I won’t get paid if I don’t get marked with a solution

Cutting out Plymouth and mirrors shaved a few more seconds off. The main culprit now is nmb.service which I am using. My /home directory is mounted as a network drive so I can backup to it and access it from my laptop.
Thanks for your help. Going to mark the BIOS comment as solution since that cut the most time out, but all of your comments were helpful!
cscs 9
But this is not a valid command on Cachy.
Is it on your system?
Its normally used by EOS or maybe some AUR package.
But would also be related to dracut, which we do not use by default either (we use mkinitcpio here like Arch).
