A few days ago I noticed that my games or my system keeps freezing (or crashing) after playing for a while. Since I haven’t changed anything on my system at that time, other than updating the system packages, I wasn’t sure how to troubleshoot the problem. At first, I thought this was specific to a single game. But after playing some other games in between I noticed the same thing happening with them. When I play a game, the system freezes visually especially in situations when there’s heavy load on the hardware. The game and the system still runs in the background which I can identify based on the audio cues but nothing happens on the screen. When in Steam Big Picture mode and pressing the Xbox button on my controller, the desktop environment crashes and is being restarted. A message appears that there was a problem with the KWin environment and the window manager was restarted. Steam appears to be gone as well as I have to restart it entirely afterwards. If I don’t play in Big Picture and with a controller, the only workaround to regain control of my system is to try to shut down or restart the entire system. Yesterday, I decided to try another Proton version. I switched to Proton Experimental. Since then I can play all of my games without any problems. So, that problem appears to be caused by CachyOS’ own Proton version, the SLR one in this instance. Does anybody else have that issue? How do I troubleshoot this to provide more details so that it can be fixed?
