ICEYE from Finnland Raises €450M, Hits €10B Valuation in ...
Jakob Steinschaden, co-written by newsrooms.ai · 2026-06-10 · via Trending Topics

Finnish space tech company ICEYE has raised 450 million euros in a Series F funding round and is valued at over 10 billion euros. The round is led by US-based growth investor General Atlantic. Together with a secondary placement, the total volume of the round exceeds one billion euros. The participation of prominent state and strategic investors from Europe and the Middle East underscores the geopolitical significance attributed to the company.

Who is behind the funding round?

In addition to General Atlantic as lead investor, a number of institutional and strategic players are participating in the round. Particularly notable is the breadth of the investor base: it encompasses sovereign funds, pension funds, technology companies, and venture capital investors alike.

  • General Atlantic (USA): Lead investor, global growth investor focused on technology
  • Solidium, Tesi, Varma, Ilmarinen (Finland): State investment company and leading Finnish pension funds
  • Nokia (Finland): Strategic investor focused on connectivity and defense
  • Qatar Investment Authority (QIA): Sovereign wealth fund of the Emirate of Qatar
  • TCV: Investor specializing in technology growth
  • Lifeline Ventures (Finland): Early-stage venture capital investor and long-standing ICEYE supporter

The composition of the investor base is no coincidence. It reflects the growing awareness that access to space-based intelligence is now regarded as strategic infrastructure, comparable to energy supply or communications networks.

The technology: SAR satellites as the key to situational awareness

ICEYE operates the world’s largest commercial constellation of satellites based on so-called Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. Unlike optical systems that rely on sunlight, SAR satellites can deliver high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface regardless of time of day or weather conditions. Clouds, darkness, or fog pose no obstacle.

This characteristic makes the technology particularly valuable for time-critical applications: military situational awareness, disaster response, border surveillance, maritime security, and the monitoring of critical infrastructure. ICEYE pursues a vertically integrated approach: the company develops, manufactures, and operates its own satellites and markets the resulting data directly to governments and commercial customers.

“ICEYE has fundamentally redefined Earth observation. The company has driven the shift toward agile next-generation satellite fleets that offer greater strategic capability at significantly higher cost efficiency,” said Sascha Günther, Managing Director at General Atlantic.

Financial figures: growth and profitability

ICEYE achieved revenue of over 250 million euros in 2025, generating an EBITDA of over 100 million euros. The contractually secured order backlog amounts to over 1.5 billion euros. This combination of growth, operational profitability, and a secured order pipeline is unusual in the space sector and is likely to have contributed significantly to the high valuation.

Metric Value (2025)
Annual revenue over 250 million euros
EBITDA over 100 million euros
Order backlog over 1.5 billion euros
Current satellite production 50 units per year
Production target by 2028 100 units per year
Company valuation (Series F) over 10 billion euros

Sovereign systems for European governments

A core business model of ICEYE is the provision of so-called sovereign satellite systems: governments receive not only access to data, but also operate their own dedicated satellites under national control. Seven European governments have so far procured such systems. As the most recent example, ICEYE delivered a fully operational system to the Polish Army within just twelve months of contract signing, which is considered one of the fastest sovereign space deployments in history.

“Sovereign intelligence from space is entering a new era, and the window to build it is now,” said Rafal Modrzewski, Co-Founder and CEO of ICEYE.

According to the company, the model is currently being expanded to additional countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The proceeds from the Series F are to be specifically invested in expanding this global presence and in new capabilities.

Why this technology is critical for Europe’s sovereignty

The geopolitical developments of recent years have brought Europe’s dependence on external technology and intelligence sources into focus. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific, and the debate over the reliability of transatlantic security guarantees have increased pressure on European states to build their own capabilities.

Space-based intelligence is a critical component in this regard. Those who can see in real time what is happening on their territory or in their neighborhood are able to make faster and more informed decisions, whether in a military context, in securing critical infrastructure, or in disaster response. Commercial providers like ICEYE can supplement state capacities or fully replace them in countries without their own space programs.

Nokia CEO Justin Hotard summed up the strategic rationale behind his company’s participation as a new investor:

“Modern defense increasingly depends on combining trusted connectivity with real-time transparency. Nokia and ICEYE bring complementary strengths that can help advance Europe’s defense, resilience, and technological sovereignty.” (Justin Hotard, President and CEO of Nokia)

Nokia’s participation is symptomatic of a broader trend: European technology companies are increasingly positioning themselves at the intersection of civilian technology and defense applications, an area that was long considered politically sensitive but is today regarded as a strategic necessity.

Outlook: scaling and new markets

With the fresh capital, ICEYE plans to double its satellite production to 100 units per year by 2028 and to adjust its launch cadence accordingly. The geographic focus is on Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The company views its constellation not as the sum of individual national systems, but as an interconnected network: according to the company, each new sovereign system also strengthens the collective intelligence capability of the overall network.
