FIANNA FÁIL HAS confirmed that TD Malcolm Byrne told the party he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Dublin.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Fianna Fáil said the Wicklow-Wexford TD informed the party he was “arrested on suspicion of drink driving after he was stopped at a mandatory Garda checkpoint in Dublin”
“The party will consider any developments in relation to this matter,” they said.
“As this is an ongoing investigation and Deputy Byrne is cooperating fully with An Garda Síochána, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”
Byrne was elected as a TD for the Wicklow-Wexford constituency in 2024.
A Garda Roads Policing Operation has been taking place throughout the June bank holiday weekend since Thursday and will continue until Tuesday.
Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
After four days of the operation, over 140 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, and over 3,140 drivers were detected for speeding offences.
