Nursing homes

1. In our main story this morning, The Journal Investigates reveals that some older people are being discharged into nursing homes from hospitals against their wishes, with the taxpayer footing the legal bill. 

New figures show that last month there were almost 60 such cases where someone had been clinically discharged, but whose actual discharge had been delayed due to unresolved issues relating to consent, capacity, wardship, decision-support arrangements or deprivation of liberty.

Ukraine

2. At least nine people have been killed and dozens have been wounded by a barrage of Russian missiles across Ukraine.

It comes days after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow was preparing a “massive new strike”.

Lebanon

3. Israel and Hezbollah clashed overnight again despite US president Donald Trump’s angry call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his military’s escalation in Lebanon.

Israel’s military took over the medieval castle of Beaufort in Lebanese territory this week, as Netanyahu vowed to push deeper into Lebanon.

4. Met Éireann is forecasting an unsettled week of weather, with rain or showers expected every day.

Today, scattered showers will continue into the afternoon, becoming more isolated and this evening with some occasional sunny breaks.

5. A 50-year-old cyclist has been hospitalised with serious injuries following a collision with a car in Dublin 7.

Denmark

6. Denmark’s social democrat prime minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday she had managed to form a left-leaning minority coalition government following months of talks after inconclusive elections in March.

Clarendon Street

7. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a 21-year-old man died following a stabbing on Dublin’s Clarendon Street in the early hours of Monday morning. 

Malcolm Byrne

8. Fianna Fáil has confirmed that TD Malcolm Byrne told the party he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in Dublin.
