This €250 longevity supplement created by Irish dermatolo...

According to the co-founder of Ireland’s Institute of Dermatologists, Professor Caitríona Ryan, the future of beauty is internal: “The skin is a window into our overall health and there’s no point in botox or other treatments, if you’re not looking after your skin.”

Having taken skin supplements myself since turning 40, I’m always interested in new innovations in the category, and this month marks an exciting time for consumers as two Irish dermatologists are bringing a longevity supplement to market.

Developed by consultant dermatologists Professor Caitríona Ryan and Professor Nicola Ralph, alongside healthcare entrepreneur Conor Murphy, ID Formulas markets itself as a science-led longevity supplement designed to support healthy ageing and overall wellbeing.

The supplement, priced at €250 a month, is taken in two parts, an Omega-3 soft gel capsule and a powder that’s mixed with water.

At the heart of the formula — the result of six years of clinical and translational research — is the Longevity Synergy Matrix, a patent-pending framework comprising 32 active ingredients selected and dosed to work across multiple health markers.

Professor Ryan said the supplement came about as she was “constantly being asked” what anti-ageing supplement she’d recommend on social media.

“I wanted to be reactive rather than proactive,” she added.

What exactly is in it?

“We put in every ingredient over the counter that can counter the signs of ageing,” Prof Ryan says (though she notes they left out pre-or probiotics, as “everyone’s microbiome is different and it could [have] destabilised the formulation”). This includes;

  • Nicotinamide (500mg): A precursor to NAD+, essential for mitochondrial function, DNA repair and energy metabolism.
  • Resveratrol (250mg): A polyphenol that has been studied for its antioxidant properties and potential role in supporting healthy ageing pathways.
  • Astaxanthin (6mg): A naturally occurring antioxidant that may help protect the skin and eyes from oxidative stress.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone): Integral to mitochondrial energy production and cellular function.
  • Quercetin: A plant flavonoid studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): Commonly used in supplements designed to support skin, hair and connective tissue health. The remaining 27 ingredients include Marine Collagen Peptides, Creatine Monohydrate and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Asked what visible differences customers can expect to see if they add the product to their skincare regime, Prof Ryan said “a reduction in transepidermal water loss, a reduction in wrinkling and fine lines, and the skin will look more radiant and hydrated”.

The team is currently awaiting DNA epigenetic test results to confirm whether the supplements can truly claim to reverse signs of biological ageing, but Ryan says the results from their pilot study showed “an average biological age reversal of 5.2 years over 12 weeks”.

A tie-in with wearable health and fitness tracker Whoop, will allow customers of both to track the supplement and see for themselves its effects on the app’s key metrics, such as strain, recovery and sleep.

It’s a fascinating look at where the beauty industry might be going, but as always, the basics remain the most important.

“At the very forefront, we should be doing things that cost nothing,” Prof Ryan says. “A good nights sleep, a good diet, reducing stress, exercising and not smoking or drinking too much alcohol.”
