Great Debates of Enterprise Storage: PART TWO
About Eric Herzog · 2026-09-17 · via Infinidat - Enterprise Data & Cloud Storage Solutions

In PART ONE of our “Great Debates” series, we explored the debates about storage architecture, cyber storage resilience, immutable snapshots, high availability, and SLA-based guarantees. In PART TWO of this 2-part blog series, we will venture into debates about storage consolidation, cyber detection, latency, power efficiency, and CAPEX/OPEX. These debates frame up very interesting and timely conversations happening in the enterprise market and in the channel about what constitutes best-in-class enterprise storage.

In today’s blog, we will start with Debate #6 and go up to Debate #10, building on what was unpacked in PART ONE. Debating the most relevant issues in enterprise storage helps CIOs and IT teams to better understand the value of high-end storage solutions and helps channel partners to zero in on customer pain points that need to be solved.

  1. The Architectural Matchup: Triple-redundant storage architecture vs. Dual-redundant storage architecture
  2. Cyber Competition: Strong cyber storage resilience vs. Weak cyber storage resilience
  3. Immutable to the Finish Line: Guaranteed, instantaneous and easily scannable immutable snapshots with no impact on application performance vs. Immutable snapshots that are more complex to scan, slower to recover, have an impact on application performance, and are not guaranteed
  4. The Uptime Challenge: 100% availability vs. 6 9’s availability
  5. Head-to-Head: Guaranteed SLAs vs. No guarantees
  6. Infrastructure “Madness”: Storage consolidation vs. Storage sprawl
  7. With or Without: Recovering data with cyber detection built into storage vs. Recovering data without cyber detection built into storage
  8. High/Low: Lower latency vs. Higher latency
  9. Power Game Changer: Power efficiency vs. Power inefficiency
  10. Money Marathon: CAPEX vs. OPEX – or a mix of both for storage

DEBATE #6 ─ Infrastructure “Madness”: Storage consolidation vs. Storage sprawl

Storage system sprawl creates enterprise IT environments of disparate storage silos, caused by different storage arrays deployed at different times with different storage operating systems and different management tools. These disconnected systems typically create an extra heavy burden on IT teams to have to manage these disparate storage silos, instead of doing higher-value work. It results in more complexity, higher costs – both CAPEX and OPEX, and inefficiencies.

Storage consolidation, in contrast, is the process of centralizing data onto a unified enterprise storage platform, reducing complexity and eliminating storage system sprawl. This enables high levels of efficiency and maximizes storage capacity utilization. It reduces IT management overhead and allows an enterprise to significantly save money on floorspace, rack space, energy, and cooling. Storage consolidation is ideal during a refresh or upgrade of the storage infrastructure, empowering IT leaders to modernize enterprise storage.

FACT: Infinidat specializes in enabling enterprise customers to implement storage consolidation without disruption and fully reap the business value of this IT modernization strategy.

DEBATE #7 ─ With or Without: Recovering data with cyber detection built into storage vs. Recovering data without cyber detection built into storage

Without cyber detection capabilities, an enterprise could inadvertently restore corrupted data in the aftermath of a cyberattack. This is a big mistake that will cause problems for an enterprise because their data is compromised – and they don’t know it.

Having cyber detection built into an enterprise storage platform is far superior because it can be used as part of a cyber resilient storage stack that has the useful combination of immutable snapshots, logical air-gapping, and a fenced forensic environment. Before a dataset is recovered, a cyber detection scan, using sophisticated AI/ML integrated into the software of the platform, can be run in an isolated environment to detect any lingering malware or ransomware and thereby ensure true data integrity. And it does not slow down rapid recovery at all.

FACT: Infinidat is one of the only high-end enterprise storage solution providers in the industry that has cyber detection built into its flagship enterprise primary storage platform.

DEBATE #8 ─ High/Low: Lower latency vs. Higher latency

Every microsecond matters in high-end storage environments running the most important corporate applications and workloads. Therefore, latency is critical. The problem is that some organizations compromise on latency or think they are doing a “trade-off” and settle for higher latency than they need to optimize their application performance and meet the SLAs of their internal customers. But there is no need to compromise. Lower latency ensures real-time responsiveness for mission-critical applications, and it maximizes utilization, while preventing bottlenecks and unplanned downtime for an enterprise or a service provider.

FACT: Infinidat’s InfiniBox® platform delivers the industry’s lowest latency in an enterprise storage solution with latency as low as 35 microseconds.

DEBATE #9 ─ Power Game Changer: Power efficiency vs. Power inefficiency

The need for power is sweeping data centers globally, and data centers are power hungry. The AI boom is one of the main reasons why data centers require an exponential increase in the amount of power. But even the needs of traditional data center use case are exploding too. Enterprises need to find ways to save energy, redirect energy, and/or save costs on energy. Power efficiency is the new “call to action” for IT teams across the world. They need to be able to show how they are implementing strategies that reduce power usage or redirect power to more strategic AI systems.

FACT: The InfiniBox G4 family reduces energy consumption for a greener storage infrastructure at a better power cost-efficiency per terabyte of storage, freeing up valuable power budgets for AI or cyber security projects.

DEBATE #10 ─ Money Marathon: CAPEX vs. OPEX – or a mix of both for storage

Pressure continues to mount in 2026 to make IT more cost-efficient and to reallocate budget away from traditional infrastructure and into AI and other emerging technologies. Enterprise storage is critical for reducing CAPEX and OPEX through consolidation, power efficiency gains, and having more high-end enterprise storage capacity in smaller form-factors.

FACT: Infinidat leads the way in enabling enterprises and service providers to lower CAPEX and OPEX for storage infrastructure.
