WhatsApp is testing out its SIM-linking features for limited users in preparation for the implementation of the provisions that have been extended till 2026.

Users on April 6 flagged an in-app notification that ask for SIM card verification for platform use on their device. The platform requests phone permission from users with the explanation,“Due to regulatory requirements in India, WhatsApp needs to check that your SIM card is in your device.” While the testing is not permanent, the move signals the platform’s readiness for implementation, as per sources.

Earlier, the government allowed messaging platforms an extension until December 31 to prepare for the SIM-binding obligations. However, industry sources told businessline that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has declined the push for a complete rollback, citing “a higher mandate.”

Aside from WhatsApp, Arattai and ShareChat too had announced the roll-out of new features on their platforms in compliance with the SIM-linking norms. The original order – that included since removed restrictions of 6-hour logouts -mentioned eight messaging apps in total: WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Arattai, Sharechat, Josh, Jiochat and Signal.
