As Star Wars returns to the big screen before Christmas with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an interesting map showing all of the filming locations has emerged.

There have been seven Star Wars movies to date, with an eighth joining the fold in the coming days, as one of the most profitable franchises in entertainment history continues its recent return to form.

The fine people at Statista decided to take a look at where the movies are filmed, creating what they called ‘The Real Star Wars Universe’.

Obviously Ireland is included, after its prominent role in the most recent film in the franchise, but the breadth of travel incorporated over the several movies is quite something.

Picking out a few of the locations, Tunisia was used the most for the iconic planet of Tatooine while the home of the Ewoks, the Forest Moon of Endor, can be found in the real world at California’s Redwood National Park.

The beautiful Skellig Michael featured in the latest Star Wars film, with further Irish landmarks to feature in the latest instalment.

Hitting cinema screens on 16 December, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set before the antics of Luke Skywalker and co in the first George Lucas trilogy.

Felicity Jones plays the role of Jyn Erso who leads a group of unlikely heroes to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction.

Based on what we saw in an earlier trailer, Rogue One appears to be darker than its bigger sibling – Star Wars: The Force Awakens – with an emphasis on some action-packed battles both on planets and in space.

Statista recently looked at the financial success of the Star Wars franchise, with Episode VII blowing away its predecessors after being released last winter.
