Megan Teske analyzes her pick and prediction for Saturday’s game between the Atlanta Dream and Seattle Storm.
Teams on opposite ends of the spectrum will close out the three-game WNBA slate tonight when the Seattle Storm and Atlanta Dream match up for the first time this season.
Taking a peak at the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook, the Dream are favored by 7.5 points on the road with -340 odds on the Moneyline. Seattle owns +270 odds of picking up the outright upset, while the total is set at 168.5 points. Let’s take a look at my pick and prediction for this Saturday night matchup.
Saturday night’s game will be the first between Atlanta and Seattle, with the Dream looking to bounce back after a pair of losses on the road to Golden State. The Dream have been one of the top teams to watch so far this season, currently sitting third in the standings, however those two losses to the fourth-place Valkyries put an end to Atlanta’s four-game win streak.
Atlanta has just the eighth-best offense in the league, averaging 88.2 points a game, but it was on fire during that run. Over their four-game win streak, the Dream were averaging 104.3 points a game on 48% shooting. In those two losses though, those numbers swung all the way back the other way, with the Dream averaging just 70.5 points a game on 36.5% shooting.
One thing that remained mostly consistent, however, through Atlanta’s recent six games was its solid defense. The Dream are third in the league allowing 82.7 points a game and in those six games, they gave up 86 points a game, with allowances of 96 and 101 points to the top-scoring Fever being outliers.
On the other side of the scale is the Storm, who are second-to-last in the league with just a 4-15 record. Seattle’s fourth win came in its most recent game, when it put an end to an 11-game losing skid with a win over the Liberty at home. Now, the Storm will be looking to stack another on top of that.
However, despite its recent outburst of scoring in its past few games, Seattle has one of the worst offenses in the league. The Storm rank second-to-last in offense, averaging 79.8 points a game on 41.9% shooting. Still, they managed 92.8 points a game in their last four, shooting it at a 46.8% clip.
The Storm’s latest surge was highlighted by a 110 and 99-point outing in their last two games, wherein they shot over 50% from the field in each. Rookie Flau’jae Johnson scored a season-high 28 points in Seattle’s win over New York, while Dominique Malonga went off for 37 points in the game prior, adding 20 against the Liberty as well.
My favorite bet for the matchup between the Storm and Dream is for the Storm to cover the 7.5-point spread. Although these two teams are at opposite ends of the WNBA standings, I think the Storm will be able to hold their own. Atlanta is coming off a couple of losses, while Seattle’s offense has seemed to have found a rhythm as of late. Outside of their loss last Saturday to Phoenix, the Storm have also not been blown out lately, with that Phoenix loss their only double-digit loss in their last five games, while they own a 9-8 ATS record this season as well. At home and with some momentum from its last couple of games, Seattle should keep this closer than the line suggests.
