Now that The Boys’ fifth and final season has come to a close, will the story continue? Sam Connon breaks down what’s up next in the franchise, as well as when you can expect Vought Rising to drop on Amazon Prime Video.
It took seven years and five seasons, but The Boys is finally over. Creator Eric Kripke, alongside producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, made a few bold decisions adapting the cult classic comic book along the way, but they aren’t done with the Vought Cinematic Universe just yet. Even with the main The Boys show coming to a close and Gen V done after two seasons, there are more stories to be told in the fictional world.
Here is everything you need to know about what is coming up next in the The Boys universe, as well as when you can expect to watch it all.
(Warning: Spoilers for The Boys Season 5 Episode 8 ahead.)
Back in 2024 at San Diego Comic Con, Amazon announced that it had ordered a prequel series centered around Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy and Aya Cash’s Stormfront during the rise of Vought International in the 1950s. The Boys writer and producer Paul Grellong is taking over as showrunner, although Kripke is sticking around as an executive producer – as are Rogen and Goldberg.
Kripke and Ackles have both confirmed that the show will premiere sometime in 2027, since principle photography ran from August 2025 through March 2026. Kripke went as far as saying that it would take eight months to finish VFX and other postproduction tasks, meaning the season won’t be complete until November or December. By that schedule, we could get Vought Rising in the first half of 2027, but that depends on how Amazon decides to roll it out amid its other flagship shows. The premiere is titled “Red Scare,” per Grellong’s Instagram.
Kripke has confirmed that he and Grellong have plans for Season 2, although Amazon has yet to greenlight production past Season 1.
Deadline initially reported in November 2023 that a spinoff of The Boys set in Mexico was in development. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Blue Beetle, created the show, while award-winning actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are attached as producers. Unlike Vought Rising, there aren’t any details on the cast or plot for The Boys: Mexico. As such, there is no confirmed release date, either.
The latest update from Kripke was that the scripts for the show are still in development. The Vought Mexico City office got a shoutout in Gen V Season 2, when we find out that Cipher spent some time there prior to his arrival at Godolkin University.
Since Amazon has delivered at least one season of either The Boys or Gen V in eight of the nine calendar years – only missing in 2021 – perhaps The Boys: Mexico could fit into the trend and come out in 2028. That is pure speculation, though, since there is still plenty up in the air in regards to the spinoff’s production.
Kripke told The Wrap last October that he had plans for Gen V Season 3. That was ahead of the Season 2 finale, and he admitted that the series’ continuation was dependent on viewership numbers. Amazon ultimately canceled Gen V in April 2026. Kripke and Goldberg said in a statement that audiences would see Gen V characters again in The Boys Season 5 – we did get a few scenes of them, but not until later in the season – as well as other future projects. Since The Boys: Mexico presumably takes place after The Boys Season 5, maybe that’s where a few of the characters could land on their feet.
On the animated side, there has been no word on continuing The Boys Presents: Diabolical. Kripke said last fall that he does not expect to make a second season of the anthology miniseries.
The show’s creators have confirmed that there will not be another season of The Boys after Season 5.
While Amazon canceled Gen V after two seasons, prequel series Vought Rising has wrapped production. Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy and Aya Cash’s Stormfront are returning for the new series, which is set to release in 2027. The Boys: Mexico is in development, although the live-action sequel series does not have a confirmed release date.
All five seasons of The Boys are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, as are both seasons of Gen V and the lone season of The Boys Presents: Diabolical. All future installments in the franchise will premiere on the streaming service, as well.
