Brendan O’Sullivan dives into his pick and prediction for the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers game on Monday, June 1.
The Rays and Tigers play the first game of their three-game series on Monday, June 1.
Tampa Bay is a -163 moneyline favorite, while Detroit is +135 on DraftKings Sportsbook. The game total is set at over/under eight runs.
Let’s get into a pick and prediction for this Rays vs. Tigers game.
One season can be all the difference for a team. The Rays were 77-85 last year, while the Tigers were 87-75. The script is flipped in 2026 with Tampa Bay owning the American League’s best record (36-20) and Detroit tied for the worst MLB record (22-38). This three-game set will be the first of two series between the clubs this season.
The Rays enter on a cold stretch, having lost five of their last seven games. Luckily for them, the Tigers have lost four straight and are 6-22 since May 1. The advantage is with the AL East leaders, who are at home for the series opener.
Monday’s matchup features two openers. Griffin Jax has appeared in 17 games for the Rays this season, starting six. He increased the length of his outings in May, but he still hasn’t gone deeper than 5.0 innings. Across five May appearances, he’s pitched just 18.2 innings. He’s been very effective, however, with his 1.93 ERA in May.
Ty Madden is making the start for the Tigers after spending time on the 15-day injured list with a forearm issue. He’s pitched just 11.1 innings in three appearances this year, and this will be his first start. His last outing came on May 15, and he has a 2.38 ERA.
Games like these are hard to gauge because it’s uncertain how long the opener will pitch for. Madden pitched 5.0 and 6.0 innings in his first two appearances, while Jax has pitched up to 5.0 innings this year.
Ultimately, I’m taking the favorites at home. Despite losing five of their last seven, the Rays still lead the American League with a 36-20 record. Jax also had a terrific May despite limited innings, which is far more encouraging than Madden, who hasn’t pitched in a couple weeks.
