Ahead of Drake’s new album “Iceman”, Ryan Wohl breaks down his top 10 songs from the legendary artist.
Drake is set to release his ninth solo studio album, ‘Iceman’, this Friday, May 15. Iceman will be his first solo album since releasing ‘For All The Dogs’ in October 2023. Before Drake’s new album comes out, let’s rewind and break down his top songs throughout his iconic career.
Check out my top 10 Drake songs below, including an honorable mention list as well.
Starting off my list of the top 10 Drake songs is “7am On Bridle Path,” which is the 14th song on ‘Certified Lover Boy’. Drake released Certified Lover Boy in 2021, an album stacked with big hits, including Papi’s Home, Champagne Poetry, Love All, Fair Trade, and Knife Talk. But the standout to me is “7am On Bridle Path” for the top-tier beat and flow he displayed throughout the song. Drake had many great artists featured on this album, but this song was just him.
Here is a line that I loved in “7am On Bridle Path”: “Somehow I’m the greatest in the game, to my own amazement. The greatest in the world, there’s no debating.”
Two days after the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Finals in 2019, Drake released a two-song EP titled ‘The Best In The World Pack’. The second song of this release, “Money In The Grave,” features Rick Ross. The cover art features the Larry O’Brien Trophy with Drake’s signature on top.
The first song on this list from Drake’s ‘Take Care’ album is Headlines. This song had a perfect mix of Drake rapping and singing. On Spotify, Headlines currently has 1.1 billion streams. Headlines features an iconic line from Drake, “I had someone tell me I fell off, ooh, I needed that.”
The sixth song on Drake’s 2016 album, ‘Views’, is ” Weston Road Flows. In this song, Drake reflects on his past and his family. Weston Road is in Toronto, where Drake is from. After a few years of producing major hits, Drake discusses his place in the industry, “Now the talk of the corner store is I’m TBE. The best ever, don’t ever question, you know better.”
Drake continued with a short EP in 2021 titled “Scary Hours 2”. The second song of this project, “Wants and Needs,” features Lil Baby and is among his most memorable rap songs in recent years. “Come with a classic, they come around years later and say it’s a sleeper”, Drake said on Wants and Needs. In this song, Drake seems to be saying that his older music is underappreciated.
Drake released Family Matters in May 2024, a response to Kendrick Lamar, who was involved in a public rivalry with Drake. But Drake didn’t just take shots at Lamar as he addressed Rick Ross, ASAP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and the Weeknd. Over the years, Drake has had lyrics about other artists, but it seemed he wanted to finally discuss everyone he has had falling-outs with.
The fourth best Drake song on my list is “Best I Ever Had,” which came out in 2009. This song was one of Drake’s biggest hits early in his career. Best I Ever Had is Diamond Certified and peaked at No. 1 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts.
The first of two songs from ‘Take Care’ on my list is The Motto featuring Lil Wayne. Drake and Lil Wayne are two of the greatest not only rappers but also artists of all time, and whenever they team up, they create magic. In 2011, this song peaked at No. 1 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and on the US Rhythmic Airplay.
One of Drake’s most iconic songs is “Marvins Room,” from his third album, ‘Take Care’, released in 2011. Marvin’s Room is a three-time Platinum song. Drake recorded this song at Marvin Gaye’s studio, which is why he named the song “Marvins Room”. Take Care is widely regarded as one of his greatest albums, and “Marvin’s Room” is a staple of that project.
