Zach Thompson shares his three favorite MLB no run first inning (NRFI) prop bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for today’s slate.
Baseball is faster than ever with the implementation of the pitch clock, but DraftKings Sportsbook also has a market for those who still can’t wait 2.5 hours for results. NRFI bets (No Run First Inning) are exactly what they sound like. They give the bettor the ability to wager specifically on the outcome of a game’s opening frame. Will either team score a run? Yes or no? It’s that simple.
With that in mind, here are my top three NRFI picks for Monday’s full slate of MLB action.
The Rays and Guardians start the slate in Cleveland just after 6:00 p.m. ET as lefties Parker Messick and Steven Matz duel at Progressive Field. The Guardians have been one of the best NRFI teams in the majors this season at 55.2%, while the Rays are also just above league average at 51.9%.
Messick will get the ball first, and the young lefty comes in riding a five-game NRFI streak. He hasn’t given up a run in the first inning all season, facing an average of only 3.8 batters in his first frames and averaging 1.2 strikeouts.
Matz has allowed a first-inning run in two of his five starts this season, but has a career 70% NRFI rate (just about league average). He got knocked around by the Reds in his last outing, and will look to bounce back in Cleveland, where he has a solid individual history against many Guardians hitters.
Both of these teams have scrappy offenses and solid pitching staffs built on similar principles. Especially with Messick’s strong start to the year, this is a strong spot for NRFI props to open up the evening.
The rain could be a serious issue with this game, but NRFI is typically pretty weatherproof, since the starting pitchers usually stay the same even if their outing is shortened due to weather. In this matchup, it’s veteran Luis Castillo for the Mariners taking on youngster Connor Prielipp for the Twins.
Prielipp has a 0% career NRFI rate since he only made one start and gave up a run to the Mets in the first. The lefty looked solid after that, though, working four innings and totaling six strikeouts with four hits and two runs against him. Prielipp is a lefty, which puts him on the strong side of splits against Seattle. The Mariners are hitting only .214 against southpaws on the season.
Castillo has an above-average 74.2% NRFI rate in his career and has three clean first frames in his five outings this season. The Mariners have been one of the worst teams for NRFI this season (34.5%), but this could be a spot for some regression in this rainy matchup with cooler temps in Minnesota
The Cubs had their 10-game winning streak snapped in Los Angeles on Saturday, and they lost a second straight game on Sunday. They’ll look to bounce back as they start a new series in San Diego in my favorite NRFI play of the day.
The home team will give the ball to Randy Vasquez, who has a 76.8% NRFI rate in his career and has not allowed a run in the first inning in any of his five starts this season.
Cubs starter Matthew Boyd has been even better in the first inning of his three starts, facing only the minimum nine hitters in those three frames and giving up one hit and no walks. Boyd has a solid 71.3% NRFI rate in his career but has been especially lights out in this season.
From a team perspective, the Cubs have hit 19 NRFI in their 28 games this season for a 67.8% rate which is fourth-highest in the majors, but the Padres have been an even stronger play hitting 20 NRFI in their 27 games (74.1%), which is the second-highest rate in the majors behind only the league-leading Orioles.
