Blake Krass gives his pick, preview and prediction for the epic Italian Open quarter-final match between Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek.
The 2026 Italian Open is the final big clay tournament ahead of the French Open. There is an epic quarter-final match set between Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek. The match begins at 7 a.m. ET on Wednesday, May 13th.
This is a fascinating match on many levels. These are two of the top-five players in the world, who have played some great head-to-head matches over the years. Both players also have very different styles, career histories and current form.
When it comes to 2026 form, Jessica Pegula has the clear edge. In eight tournaments played this year, Pegula has made at least the quarter-finals seven times. She has also won two titles, the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Charleston Open. At a time when women’s tennis is being dominated by youth, the 32-year-old American is playing some of the best tennis of her life.
Iga Swiatek’s form in 2026 has not been as great. She has not made it past the quarter-finals in any tournament this year, hoping to do it here in Rome for the first time in 2026. Swiatek has struggled against top-10 players this year. She also had to exit the Madrid Open early with an injury. Swiatek is hoping to get back on track before Roland-Garros, where she is a four-time champion.
When it comes to playing on clay, Swiatek has a significant edge. She is one of the greatest clay players in the history of women’s tennis, with four French Opens to her name, tied for the third-most in the Open Era. Swiatek has also won the Italian Open three times before, so she loves playing in Rome.
Pegula has never been renowned as a great clay player. She has always done her best work on hardcourt. However, Pegula started this clay season by winning the title in Charleston. While the competition level was not as high as in a tournament like this, she proved that she can get the job done on clay. In fact, Pegula has now won the Charleston Open in back-to-back seasons.
The head-to-head history between these two is fascinating. In 11 career matches, Swiatek has won six and Pegula has won five. Pegula has won both of the last two, one in 2025 and one in 2024. Despite being top-10 players in the world at the same time, these two have only faced off once since the beginning of 2024. Also, these two have only played each other on clay once before. That came all the way back in 2022 at Roland-Garros, a match that the at-the-time No. 1 player in the world, Swiatek, won handily.
My best bet for this match is for Jessica Pegula to cover the spread of +1.5 sets. Pegula has the clear edge in recent form and in recent head-to-head meetings. However, Pegula has a massive advantage when it comes to history on clay and even more specifically, history here in Rome. Based on all of that, it’s hard to bet against Swiatek winning the match. She is in desperate need of a big win heading into Roland-Garros. That being said, Pegula should put up a great fight and force the match to go three sets.
