You can check out a full preview and prediction for the matchup on DraftKings Network. But for now, let’s dive into the top player prop bets for the opening matchup of this Western Conference clash.
Along with an exciting young core, the Trail Blazers sprinkled in a couple notable veterans like Jerami Grant. The 31-year-old played 57 games, averaging 18.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Grant connected on 38.9% of his threes, shooting 6.1 per game. He averaged 2.4 threes per game and made over 1.5 three-pointers in 40 of 57 games.
San Antonio has an elite defense, and it will not be easy to score from any area of the floor. However, it ranks 17th in opponents’ three-point attempts allowed and 15th in opponents’ three-point makes. Victor Wembanyama is a game-changing defensive presence, so Portland will likely attack from outside the paint.
Wembanyama’s defensive impact is difficult to quantify as blocks don’t tell the whole story. Still, he led the NBA in blocks per game in all three of his seasons thus far. This year he averaged 3.1 blocks per game, tallying at least four blocks in 27 games. Perhaps the most impressive is his 29.2 minutes per game. He’ll certainly play more minutes in the playoffs.
The Trail Blazers like to get downhill, score in transition, and attack the offensive glass. Put-backs account for 16% of their scoring thanks to Donovan Clingan leading the NBA in offensive rebounds this season. This offense gives Wembanyama plenty of shot-blocking chances.
Clingan has quietly developed into a solid three-point shooter this season. After converting on 28.6% of his 0.7 three-point attempts per game as a rookie, Clingan knocked down 34.1% on 3.2 attempts per game this season. His confidence has only grown, as he attempted 3.5 three-pointers per game on 39.4% across his final three games played.
Clingan will be Wembanyama’s primary matchup, so it would be wise for Portland to draw the Spurs’ star out of the paint. This will open driving lanes for other players, while also putting Clingan in position to nail a couple threes.
