Zach Thompson dives into Monday night’s seven-game MLB slate to find three value options for your DraftKings lineups.
Major League Baseball starts the work week with seven games on the main DFS fantasy baseball slate, which gets underway at 6:40 p.m. ET. Plenty of star power is in play both on the mound and at the plate, but some strong MLB DFS value picks also stand out. These players offer big-time upside at lower salaries. If you need to go cheap at a spot or two to balance your spending, these values can definitely stretch your salary cap space while still bringing good potential.
After two divisional games off the top on Monday, the two games in the Midwest could have some weather issues with rain in the forecast in Chicago and Minneapolis. The West Coast games look clear, though, so be sure to plan late pivots in case the middle games get washed out.
Let’s dive in and take a look at a few of the best value plays from the 14 teams in the player pool this Monday night:

I like Connor Prielipp ($6,700) as a bargain play, but the weather in Minnesota looks pretty dicey. Instead, I’m pivoting to Matthew Boyd, who is a pricier option but makes the most sense as a value play from the probable pitchers on Monday night. Boyd had a rough start to the season, giving up six runs on Opening Day to the Nats, but he bounced back with an excellent start against the Angels with 10 strikeouts and 32.4 FPTS in his lone win of the year. Unfortunately, he landed on the injured list with a left biceps strain before his next start but only needed the minimum time on the IL before returning last Wednesday.
In his return, he worked 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits to the Phillies. He earned 13.5 FPTS in that outing with five strikeouts and threw 84 pitches in his return. He is unlikely to have any significant restrictions on Monday against the Padres at pitcher-friendly Petco Park. The Padres rank in the middle of the pack in most offensive categories, and they’ll be coming home after their two games in Mexico City over the weekend. Boyd brings a good upside as the Cubs look to get back on track after dropping two straight to the Dodgers following their 10-game winning streak.
Horwitz and the Pirates host the Cardinals in the first game of the night, and the lefty should be in a good spot to continue delivering value as he takes on Cardinals righty Dustin May ($6,300). Horwitz is hitting .257 on the season with two doubles, two homers and eight RBI.
He has hit safely in four of his last five games with multiple at-bats, producing at least 7 FPTS in each of those four contests. Horwitz struck out as a pinch hitter Sunday but had 16 FPTS in the first two games of the Pirates stop in Milwaukee.
May has allowed lefties like Horwitz to hit .391 against him this season, with three homers and a .459 wOBA. He has also been a favorable matchup on the road, giving up eight runs in 8 2/3 innings on 13 hits and three home runs. May has looked better in his last couple of outings, but Horwitz is still a great value play under $3,000 if you need a bargain play at 1B.
In the outfield, Myles Straw is a strong option to consider at barely over the minimum, especially if he leads off against lefty Ranger Suarez ($8,000) and the Red Sox in the first game of their AL East series north of the border. Straw doesn’t typically showcase a ton of power, but he’s hitting .316 on the season with a home run, 12 runs scored and a stolen base.
Not counting his two pinch-hit games, he is 6-for-19 with a double, a homer and a stolen base over his last six games. He has two barrels and an average exit velocity over 90 miles per hour during that stretch, and he moved into the leadoff spot on Saturday when the Jays faced lefty Joey Cantillo.
Straw and the Jays will take on Suarez, who is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA and 4.05 FIP. If he’s back in the leadoff spot against Suarez, he’ll be an extremely cheap way to get both a solid floor and a high ceiling.
