Bryce Elder, Atlanta Braves vs. Boston Red Sox ($8,400) — Elder has been lucky to start the season, as the BABIP is only .230 while the strand rate is 81.4%. The 1.81 ERA is not supported by the 3.09 FIP. That said, the barrel rate is only 3.5% while the hard-hit rate is 38.7%. The strikeout rate is 24.4% but the walk rate is elevated at 9.2%. The Red Sox are 23rd in walks, 12th in strikeouts, 28th in ISO, 27th in wOBA and 28th in wRC+. Elder has put up over 20 FPTS in six of nine starts.
Luis Severino, Athletics vs. San Francisco Giants ($6,300) — Severino has a decent strikeout rate of 22.3%. He’s allowed five home runs in 48.2 innings while the FIP of 4.42 is slightly higher than the 4.07 ERA. His big bugaboo is the control, as the walk rate is 13.7%. But San Francisco is dead-last in walks while being 27th in ISO, 29th in wOBA and 30th in wRC+. The range of outcomes has been cavernous for Severino this season, as he’s had five games with 10 or fewer FPTS with a low of 1.4 FPTS. As for the upside, he’s gone over 20 FPTS twice with a high of 30.2 FPTS. Severino has pitched at least five innings is eight of nine starts with three outings of six innings or more.
Colson Montgomery, Chicago White Sox vs. Chicago Cubs ($4,200) — Montgomery has a strikeout problem (29.1%), but the ISO is .270 and he’s bopped 11 home runs in 175 plate appearances. The launch angle is 21.1 degrees, the barrel rate is 14.9% and the bat speed of 76.3 mph is in the 95th percentile. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 127 and the ISO is .255. Seven of the 11 home runs have come off righties. Jameson Taillon has a 5.67 FIP, 12.9% K-BB%, 18.4 degree launch angle and 13.3% barrel rate. Against lefties, the FIP is 6.44 while the K-BB% is 10%. Six of the 11 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.
Andrew Vaughn, Milwaukee Brewers at Minnesota Twins ($2,700) — He’s only seen 30 plate appearances since returning from hamate surgery, but Vaughn has not shown any lingering effects. The walk rate is 13.3%, strikeout rate is 13.3% and the ISO is .208. The average exit velocity is 90.7 mph. The launch angle is only 7.4 degrees, though, while the barrel rate is 5.0%. The bat speed is also only 66.7 mph, so not all is sunshine and unicorns. It’s a small sample of just 11 plate appearances, but the wRC+ against left-handed pitching is 198. His career mark is 122 with a .165 ISO. Connor Prielipp has had a decent start to his MLB career with a 3.32 ERA and 26.6% strikeout rate. But the FIP is much higher at 4.37 as he’s been very lucky with a .196 BABIP and 65.5% strand rate. The average exit velocity is elevated at 91 mph, his average launch angle is 21 degrees and the barrel rate is 12.2%. He has been good against righties with a 31.1% strikeout rate, but the BABIP is only .212.
Brandon Nimmo, Texas Rangers at Houston Astros ($4,300) — Nimmo bats first or second in the order. He has four home runs, 18 runs, 12 RBI and a stolen base in 181 plate appearances. The walk rate is 9.4% while the strikeout rate is 19.3%. He’s slashing .281/.359/.425, although the BABIP is an elevated .336. The average exit velocity is 91.8 mph while the wRC+ is 122 against right-handed pitching. Kai-Wei Teng has been decent to start the season with a 3.88 FIP in 26 innings. The average exit velocity is 91.4 mph though, and he’s struggled against lefties, posting a 5.24 FIP with all three home runs allowed coming off the bat of a lefty.
Jarred Kelenic, Chicago White Sox vs. Chicago Cubs ($2,200) — Kelenic is batting towards the bottom of the lineup, but at least he’s been in the lineup due to injuries. Through 37 plate appearances, the ISO is only .031 but the bat speed is a more-than-respectable 74.2 mph. The Statcast numbers are chef’s kiss — a 96.7 mph average exit velocity, 12.4 degree launch angle and 20.8% barrel rate. He has a career ISO of .162, so I expect some of that hard contact to translate into homers sooner than later. I went over the struggles that Taillon has against lefties in the Montgomery section written above.
