Johnny Avello breaks down his picks for the 2026 Kentucky Oaks, which runs on Friday, May 1.
As Kool & The Gang would say, “it’s ladies night, oh, what a night!”
The 2026 Kentucky Oaks will run on Friday night at 8:40 p.m. ET at Churchill Downs.
This year’s Oaks shapes up as one of the deeper and more competitive editions in recent years, with a blend of proven Grade I form, rapidly improving fillies, and a few potential pace wildcards that could decide everything in the stretch.
The 1 1/8-mile test for three-year-old fillies historically rewards a combination of tactical speed and the ability to finish strongly, especially if the early pace gets heated.
I expect an honest tempo. Two entrants (Dazzling Dame & Pashmina) prefer to be forwardly placed, while Explora will be closely behind pushing the tempo, which could set things up for a stalking type rather than a pure front-runner. Oaks fields often punish fillies who go too fast early, so positioning and the trip will matter as much as raw talent.
Win & Place – Prom Queen
Exacta’s & Trifecta’s – Prom Queen keyed in the first & second position with: Explora, Zany, Search Party, Counting Stars, Meaning and Always A Runner.
On Friday, I’ll have selections for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby and please don’t forget to Opt-In Saturday for” King Of The Track” where DraftKings is paying out ONE MILLION DOLLARS to split among everyone who has a $5 bet on the winning horse.
