Gage Jump, Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels ($7,800) — It’s a small slate and I’m not enamored with the pitching options up top, so I lean towards paying down at both slots. So Jump it is. A ringing endorsement! Gage has been solid through 23.1 innings this season. The FIP is 2.5 and he hasn’t given up a home run yet. The lefty is allowing an average exit velocity of 87.7 mph and a 3% barrel rate. The strikeout rate isn’t robust at 20.2%, though. Against left-handed pitching, the Angels are 11th in ISO, 13th in wOBA and 18th in wRC+. Los Angeles is seventh in strikeouts, though. Over the last three games, Jump has pitched five, 6.1 and seven innings, finishing with 13.6, 20.6 and 24.8 FPTS.
Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets ($7,500) — Nola is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get. He has nine games with fewer than 10 FPTS on the season, including a -5.2 FPTS performance. On the flip side, he’s put up over 20 FPTS four times with a high of 30.6 FPTS. New York is 25th in ISO and 29th in both wOBA and wRC+. I side with the flip side for this one.
Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City Royals vs. St. Louis Cardinals ($6,300) — Witt is slashing .290/.364/.454 with a 10.3% walk rate, 17.3% strikeout rate and .164 ISO. The power is down a bit, as he posted an ISO of over .200 the prior three seasons, but he does have 27 stolen bases in 330 plate appearances. The average exit velocity is a healthy 93.2 mph, barrel rate is 11.8% and the bat speed is 73.6 mph. Against left-handed pitching, Witt has a 143 wRC+ and .194 ISO. Matthew Liberatore is allowing an average exit velocity of 91.5 mph and 10.2% barrel rate. Against righties, the K-BB% is only 9.8% and eight of the 14 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a righty.
Edmundo Sosa, Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets ($2,700) — Sosa only has an average exit velocity of 86.7 mph with a 6.8% barrel rate. Against left-handed pitching, the ISO is .183 and three of the four home runs have come off a lefty. Over the last four games, Sosa put up 5, 8, 2 and 22 FPTS. Sean Manaea has a 9.8% K-BB% against righties with a 4.6 FIP.
Cody Bellinger, New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox ($4,800) — Bellinger has 10 home runs, 43 runs, 47 RBI and eight stolen bases in 303 plate appearances. The walk rate is 13.5%, strikeout rate is 12.2% and the ISO is .195. The Statcast numbers don’t jump off the screen, but the wRC+ is 137 against right-handed pitching while seven of the 10 home runs have come off righties. Sean Burke has a 11.4% K-BB% and 4.53 FIP against lefties. Six of the nine home runs have come off the bat of a lefty.
Spencer Jones, New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox ($2,100) — Yup, we stacking against White Sox pitching. I wrote in the Bellinger section how Burke has had some issues with lefties while the White Sox bullpen has the seventh-highest FIP. Jones has a 39.6% strikeout rate and the .239 batting average is fueled by a .391 BABIP. The walk rate is 13.2%, though. But, but, but…the average exit velocity is a whopping 97.4 mph with a 77.8 mph bat speed. The barrel rate is only 4%. Over the last five games, Jones has two home runs and put up 19 and 22 FPTS.
