Blake Krass gives his ranking of the nine Jersey Shore cast members ahead of the new season of ‘Jersey Shore: Family Vacation.’
The final season of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation premieres on Thursday, May 7, on MTV and Paramount+. In what could truly be the end of an era of reality TV, here is a ranking of the nine original cast members of Jersey Shore.
This ranking is largely based on the original season of Jersey Shore, although it is impossible to ignore how some of these cast members have developed over the duration of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, and their lives off the screen. So, those will be factors in these rankings as well.
Angelina Pivarnick was the only original cast member to not stay on the show for the duration of the original series. Pivarnick left the Shore after just a few days of filming in Season 1 after not gelling with her housemates. She was invited back for Season 2 in Miami, but she did not have a much better showing there. Pivarnick was constantly fighting with all of her housemates and was famously one of the only people to make DJ Pauly D lose his cool over the six seasons of the show. Pivarnick returned for Family Vacation, but she had a similar problem of not quite fitting in with the rest of the group. For me, she is the clear No. 9 on this list.
Vinny Guadagnino entered the Jersey Shore house at just 21 years old. He grew up on the show, and like any person at that age, he had some great moments and some moments he would surely like back. Guadagnino was definitely the most reserved member of the cast in the first couple of seasons. However, as time went on, he became Pauly D’s best friend and partner in crime. That led to Guadagnino having some great moments on the show, but mostly just because of his association with Pauly D. In later seasons, particularly on Family Vacation, Guadagnino developed a bit of an arrogance that has made him hard to root for in recent seasons.
If we were ranking these cast members based on their real lives off the screen, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro would be last on the list. He has a plethora of legal issues that are not overly surprising based on his behavior on the show. However, he ranks seventh rather than ninth on this list because of the iconic moments he was a part of on the show. Ortiz-Magro’s relationship with Sammi Giancola was one of the great throughlines that made the series so legendary. Ortiz-Magro broke his number one rule, to never fall in love at the Jersey Shore. That set him on a wild, but unforgettable, journey over the six seasons of the original series.
Deena Nicole Cortese was the only full-time cast member not to be on the first season of the show. Cortese first appeared in Season 3, replacing Angelina Pivarnick when she left the show. Cortese entered the season with a bang, making enemies with Sammi Giancola and Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and becoming very close with Mike Sorrentino on just her first night in the house. She had a roller-coaster of a first couple of seasons on the show. Cortese had some high highs, creating some hilarious moments with her fellow meatball, Snooki. However, she also had some low lows, especially during the season in Italy. Cortese seems to have a great life that we get to witness on Family Vacation, but she doesn’t fancy being a part of the major drama anymore.
Jenni ‘JWoww’ Farley is the clear No. 5 on this list for me. She is undoubtedly more legendary than the cast members already discussed on this list, but she does not crack my Mount Rushmore. JWoww entered the series with a boyfriend, but her early fling with Pauly D threw that out the window. She was always the calming force next to her best friend Snooki, but she had some wild moments herself. From punching The Situation in the face in Atlantic City to taking a bathroom break behind the bar at Karma, JWoww was an essential part of this cast.
The first member of my Jersey Shore Mount Rushmore is Sammi Giancola. If we were only counting the best moments in the history of the original series, Giancola would arguably be at the top of the list. On the surface, Giancola was the most normal person on the cast. However, she went to a place no other cast member on this show could go when she was angry. Giancola’s fights with Ronnie Ortiz-Magro were the stuff of legend on the early seasons of the show. Between “who wrote the note? You two” and “RAHHHHN STAHHHHP,” she has some unforgettable scenes in the series. Giancola did miss out on the first few seasons of Family Vacation, but she eventually made her return to the spin-off series.
The Situation was unlike anybody Americans outside of the tri-state area had ever seen before. His religious commitment to “gym, tan, laundry” was at the core of everything the show was about in its early seasons. Unfortunately, Sorrentino’s substance abuse problems became all too glaring in the middle of the series. However, his sobriety in the final season of the original series and everything he has done to improve himself since the original series have been remarkable. Despite spending some time in prison for financial crimes, Sorrentino has completely turned his life around and has a beautiful, loving family. He is undoubtedly the MVP of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, which boosts him up this list to No. 3.
Snooki is not only the most iconic cast member of this show, but she is also one of the most iconic people to ever be on reality television. While The Situation embodied the male caricature of the cast with his GTL lifestyle, Nicole Polizzi embodied everything the female side of the show was about. From the drunken meatball antics to her spray tan and iconic poof, there would be no Jersey Shore without Snooki. She had some of the most iconic highs, lows, romances and fights on the show. Nobody on the cast understood what it meant to be a character on reality TV in 2009 quite like Polizzi, paving the way for hundreds of people who have come after her on a variety of shows.
The No. 1 character in my rankings is DJ Pauly D. Pauly D was the perfect blend of every other cast member. He was as obsessed with the GTL lifestyle as The Situation, but he never let it consume him. He had the chill side of Guadagnino and the emotional side of Ortiz-Magro, but he knew when to bring out each side of himself depending on the situation. Pauly D’s blowout was an iconic look, and he also created a big chunk of the slang the show became famous for. Despite his late-night escapades, Pauly D always seemed like a genuinely good person and was easy to root for. Once you have rewatched the original series multiple times, as I have, Pauly D clearly becomes the most fun character to watch on the show. Due to his ability to avoid the drama (most of the time), but also create so many legendary moments, DJ Pauly D tops my Jersey Shore cast member rankings.
