Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the Athletics.

Oakland enters at 13-11, sitting atop the AL West and riding a seven-game road winning streak, while Seattle comes in 10-15, trying to stabilize after dropping the first two games of this series. T-Mobile Park keeps the environment tight most nights, and with a total sitting at 7.5, this projects as a controlled, pitching-driven game where early innings carry more weight than late volatility. Oakland has already put up six and five runs in this series, but Seattle still holds the clearer run-prevention profile on paper, creating a game that hinges less on total offense and more on who lands first. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the Athletics.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Mariners vs. Athletics prediction, preview

The gap between Aaron Civale and Logan Gilbert shows up fastest before the game has time to settle. Civale enters 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 20.1 innings, but the underlying indicators soften that line: an 18.0% strikeout rate, 3.88 FIP, and 4.04 xFIP, with damage clustered early. The first trip through the order has been especially vulnerable, with a .364 wOBA and .515 slugging percentage allowed, plus nine hits and three walks in just 8.1 innings. Gilbert’s surface ERA sits at 4.03, but the skill layer is much stronger—29.0 innings, 32 strikeouts against five walks, a 27.8% strikeout rate, 0.93 WHIP, 2.90 FIP, and 3.08 xFIP. His recent run reinforces that stability, with 18.1 innings, five earned runs, 19 strikeouts, and two walks over his last three starts. That combination gives Seattle the cleaner path to controlling the first half of the game.

Oakland’s lineup has earned respect in this matchup, even against a quality right-hander. The Athletics are hitting .252/.330/.404 against right-handed pitching with 20 home runs and 74 RBI, and they have been even sharper recently at .262/.351/.468 with six home runs, 18 RBI, and 18 walks over their last five against righties. Shea Langeliers anchors the damage with eight home runs, a .312 average, and a .613 slug, while Carlos Cortes is at .326/.396/.535 and Jeff McNeil has stayed above .300 in April. Tyler Soderstrom leads the club with 16 RBI, and Coby Mayo has already added a three-run homer in this series.

Seattle’s offense takes a different shape. The Mariners are at .231/.335/.381 against right-handed pitching with 18 home runs, and recent form has improved to .257/.323/.437 with 18 runs and seven home runs over the last five. Luke Raley is near .300 with five home runs and 13 RBI, Randy Arozarena brings a .381 OBP, and Cal Raleigh has homered in back-to-back games. One lineup builds pressure across the order; the other leans on timely swings and early bursts.

Athletics vs. Mariners pick, best bet

The Athletics have already scored six and five runs in this series, and their .252/.330/.404 split against righties is backed by consistent contact and walk volume. Gilbert’s ERA north of 4.00 leaves room for contact to turn into damage, particularly against a group with multiple hitters slugging above .500. Seattle’s own lineup is not immune to droughts, carrying 166 strikeouts in 24 games against right-handed pitching and showing the kind of volatility that can stall innings before they begin. If Oakland strings early contact together or Seattle fails to convert its first chances, the script can flip quickly.

What matters most here is isolating the part of the game where those risks are minimized. Seattle averages 0.64 first-inning runs per game, while Oakland sits at just 0.08, one of the lowest marks in baseball. Civale’s early-inning profile aligns directly with that split, while Gilbert’s strikeout and walk control give him a stronger chance to suppress immediate scoring. Mariners F5 ML at -195 carries too much price for a market that still loses on a tie, and the full-game -186 pulls in Oakland’s stronger overall offensive profile. Mariners F5 -0.5 at -130 asks for a lead rather than dominance and keeps the focus on the innings where the pitching edge is most meaningful.

Seattle does not need to separate over nine innings for this to work; it only needs to get ahead before the game opens up. Mariners F5 -0.5 (-130) is the play. The way it loses is if Oakland’s right-handed production shows up immediately and Gilbert gives up early damage, but the numbers—Civale’s first-pass vulnerability, Seattle’s early scoring edge, and Gilbert’s strikeout-driven control—still point to Seattle holding the lead through five.

Mariners 3, Athletics 1 (through five).

Best bet: Mariners F5 -0.5 (-130) vs. Athletics
