Zach Thompson details some of his Round 1 best bets for the Cadillac Championship this week at The Blue Monster in Doral.
The PGA TOUR has a brand new Signature Event beginning this Thursday, April 30. The Cadillac Championship marks the return of the PGA TOUR to The Blue Monster Course at Trump National Doral. The course can be an absolute beast and plays very difficult due to all the water hazards and driving distance required to contend. It should be a great week of golf ahead, so let’s take a look at the wide variety of markets available on DraftKings Sportsbook and pinpoint some of my best bets for Round 1 of the Cadillac Championship.
Round 1 gets underway at 8:40 a.m. ET, with players teeing off in pairs about every 10 minutes until the final group gets underway at 2:55 p.m. ET. The weather forecast looks fairly benign early in the day with winds kicking up more later in the day and later in the week as well. Saturday and Sunday scoring could be extremely difficult as winds intensify, but Thursday looks like a good chance to attack the Blue Monster and find some birdie chances.
In this post, we’ll focus on my three best bets for Round 1 of the Cadillac Championship on Thursday, April 30. Let’s tee it up!
Harman has struggled off the tee over his last three months, which could cause him trouble at the Blue Monster. He ranks 63rd in the 72-man field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee over the last three months. He ranks 67th in the 72-man field in driving distance, which will put him at a disadvantage with all the distance needed.
Harman can contend in wind and tough conditions, but it’s hard to see him going low on this particular layout. He finished at par or over-par in 14 of his last 24 rounds, and he struggled towards the end of his final round at the RBC Heritage, posting four bogeys and a double bogey over the final 12 holes.
His shaky form and lack of course fit makes it likely that he finishes Round 1 at par (72) or higher on Thursday.
At 10:35 a.m. ET, Akshay Bhatia and Ricky Castillo tee off in a fun pairing of young players who have already won on the PGA TOUR this season.
Bhatia got his win at the Signature Event at Bay Hill, which is another water-focused Florida track, showing he has the ability to contend on difficult tracks that demand precision and power from tee-to-green.
Overall, Bhatia has made the cut in six of his last seven events dating back to the WM Phoenix Open, where he finished T3. He finished T13 at THE PLAYERS the week after his win at Bay Hill, and barely missed the cut at The Masters. Two weeks ago, he bounced back with a T16 at the RBC Heritage in Harbour Town, where he made 21 birdies, which were tied for the most in the tournament. He’s placed in the top 20 in each of the four Signature Events this year.
Castillo got his win at the Puerto Rico Open and is seen as a young rising star, even though he’s a year older than Bhatia. Since winning, though, he has finished T70 at THE PLAYERS, T46 at the Valspar, T44 at the Houston Open, and T60 at the RBC Heritage.
Bhatia has much better form and is a more proven option than Castillo, although both have potential to produce good numbers.
Later in the day at 1:20 p.m. ET, Alex Fitzpatrick and Nico Echavarria tee off in another pairing of winners earlier this year.
Fitzpatrick has picked up a pair of wins, winning on the DP World Tour at the Hero Indian Open a month ago, and then winning last week while playing alongside his brother Matt Fitzpatrick at the Zurich Classic. That second win earned him his PGA TOUR card for the rest of the season.
Before coming to the PGA TOUR to stay, Fitzpatrick was turning in excellent results over the last few months on the DP World Tour, and he ranks second in the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee over his last 20 rounds. Since this is a course that demands strong driving, Fitzpatrick should be well-suited to succeed right away at Doral. He logged six top-25 finishes, including a T6 at the Joburg Open in early March, before getting his breakthrough win at the Hero Indian Open at the end of the month.
On the other side of this matchup is Nico Echavarria, who got his win at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches after Shane Lowry stumbled on the closing holes. Since then, though, he finished T44, T66, MC, MC and T81. The last of those came at the RBC Heritage, where only 82 golfers were in the field.
Echavarria has shown spike potential in the past, but Fitzpatrick is in much better form and I think he’ll be able to continue his strong play in Round 1 this week.
