Everything You Need to Know Before From Episode 3 Season 4
Slightly slower Episode 2 after a wild season opener, but that was fitting given the town didn’t find out about Jim until now. Lots to take stock of going into Episode 3:
Matthews Family — As I just mentioned, this episode confirms that Jim is toast, and now the townsfolk know it, too. This reveal was about as twisted as it could get, reminding viewers how brutal From can be. Naturally, Tabitha, Julie and Ethan all had a difficult time handling this development. From their individual reactions stemmed some important details:
Tabitha — She might be handling this the worst, all things considered. In addition to being riddled with regret regarding the manner in which her relationship with Jim devolved, she continues to be awful to Jade. Being the one who holds more answers to questions than anyone else in the town, Tabitha’s continued spiral has become massively problematic.
Julie — She’s now leaning into her “storywalker” abilities, which nearly led to her own death. Julie still has to figure some things out on this front, but she’s moving in the right direction — and handling her father’s passing better than the rest of her family.
Ethan — Following an (understandable) tantrum, he ran away. In doing so, he came across Jim’s ghost, who may have given his son another piece to the puzzle: The Lake of Tears. Ethan had a dream about it when his family first arrived in town, and Ghost Jim told Ethan that this lake needs to be found.
Jade — With Tabitha unravelling, Jade decided to fill in Boyd (and Ellis) about his findings to this point. Jade believes the note left by Jim’s body — “KNOWLEDGE COMES AT A COST” — was the result of Jade and Tabitha’s learnings from Season 3. Upon hearing this, Boyd cited a quote from Sara earlier in the show: “If we push too hard, something would push back.”
Boyd — Without resorting to more physical force, he gave Elgin the business again. While Elgin’s right that the truth will probably come out about what Boyd and Sara did, Boyd’s threat that Elgin won’t survive that revelation felt very real. If that all wasn’t enough, Boyd had to manage the Jim situation, put some pieces together with Jade and, finally, put a stop to Acosta’s recent bit of nonsense. Even with all of that happening, this was the first episode in a while where Boyd actually seemed like himself.
Sophia / Man in the Yellow Suit — After nearly getting Kenny killed, Sophia was handed off to Sara. What could possibly go wrong?
Victor — The note at Jim’s death site — “KNOWLEDGE COMES AT A COST” — seemed to trigger Victor in a big way. Naturally, his reaction raises questions about the message and potential ties to the past, but there may be a smidge more to it. As his dad tried to work through things with him, Victor added, “It takes everything good away.” At one point, it sounded like Victor was going to say “this place,” but he never uttered the word “place” or something of the ilk. That could simply be the result of him rambling, but it’s hard not to wonder if “it” might be something more than the town rather than the town itself. (Meaning, what if “it” is a being rather than the town?)
Donna — Starting to worry about her a bit. While Boyd has been losing it more than anyone, he’s at least expressed that in a few ways to Kenny and Ellis, who both calmed him down effectively — at least in the short term. Donna is on her own more so. She’s learning everything second-hand, but bearing all of this info is a burden regardless of how you come to it. What’s more, she has similar pressures to Boyd but not the same support system.
Acosta – In the latest edition of “Acosta is the worst,” she took the ambulance for a joy ride. Kristi jumped in the passenger seat before Acosta could take off, hoping to bring reason to the situation. Unfortunately, Kristi’s efforts proved to be for not. And now, the one working automobile in town has joined the rest of the scrap heap. (At least no one got hurt, I guess.)
