Atlanta Braves vs. Chicago Cubs prediction, pick for MLB ...
Dan Johnson · 2026-05-14 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs (27-15) and Braves (29-13) meet again at Truist Park with the series carrying the feel of a National League measuring stick. Atlanta opened with a 5-2 win that looked even cleaner than the score, holding Chicago to one hit, riding a four-run fifth, and pushing the best record in baseball further into the sunlight. The Cubs arrive with a stronger season-long offensive identity than the last few nights suggest, but the current skid is impossible to ignore: three straight losses, two total runs over that stretch, and Alex Bregman’s solo shot Tuesday serving as the only interruption to a 23-inning scoreless drought. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Braves vs. Cubs prediction, preview

Shota Imanaga gives the Cubs the steadier starter profile, and the numbers still read like a real advantage: 2.28 ERA, 28.3% strikeout rate, 7.0% walk rate, 0.76 HR/9, 3.03 FIP, 2.80 xFIP, .246 wOBA and .279 xwOBA allowed. Atlanta’s offense is too dangerous to treat that as a shutdown guarantee, especially with Imanaga allowing a 9.9% barrel rate, but he is still the cleanest arm in this game. JR Ritchie is the volatility point. His 3.63 ERA is carrying a much shakier engine underneath: 5.10 xERA, 5.11 FIP, 6.87 xFIP, 16.0% walk rate, .359 wOBA and .353 xwOBA allowed. He has walked seven, four and six batters in his first three starts, and that kind of traffic against this Cubs order can turn one mistake into an inning.

Chicago’s bats are cold, but this is still a lineup built to pressure a rookie whose command has wandered. The Cubs own a 117 wRC+, .337 wOBA, .164 ISO, 11.9% walk rate and 20.4% strikeout rate as a team, and they rank sixth in MLB at 2.90 first-five runs per game. Seiya Suzuki is the conversion bat, carrying a .405 wOBA, .377 xwOBA, 43.1% hard-hit rate and 9.7% barrel rate. Ian Happ gives the inning its patience-and-power shape with a .366 wOBA, .362 xwOBA, 18.3% barrel rate and 16.6% walk rate. Moisés Ballesteros matters in the two-hole because his contact quality already looks real—90.8 mph average exit velocity, 48.8% hard-hit rate and 13.4% barrel rate—while Nico Hoerner gives Chicago an early traffic piece with elite bat-to-ball skills. The path is clear: make Ritchie throw strikes, take the walks he gives away, and let Suzuki, Happ, Ballesteros or Bregman supply the extra-base hit that changes the inning.

Cubs vs. Braves pick, best bet

Atlanta’s counterpunch is real enough to keep this from becoming a simple Cubs revival story. Matt Olson is the primary damage bat, sitting at a .431 wOBA, 178 wRC+, .350 ISO, 19.0% barrel rate, 51.2% hard-hit rate and 93.4 mph average EV. Drake Baldwin has given the lineup another lefty-mashing force at .392 wOBA, 151 wRC+ and 14.7% barrels, while Ozzie Albies brings a .968 OPS against left-handed pitching and enough contact skill to keep Imanaga from cruising through soft pockets. Michael Harris II has been one of the loudest contact bats in the sport with a .420 xwOBA, 58.9% hard-hit rate and 95.2 mph average EV, and Austin Riley’s homer Tuesday was a reminder that his right-handed power can still alter a lefty matchup. The thinner bottom third with Mike Yastrzemski, Sandy León and Jorge Mateo keeps Atlanta’s team-total ceiling a little more sequencing-dependent, but Olson-Baldwin-Albies-Riley-Harris is a brutal middle for any pitcher to navigate.

The market shape is why the early Chicago window is the cleaner angle than a full-game Cubs number. Ritchie’s changeup has been punished for a .506 wOBA, .474 xwOBA, .786 SLG and .750 xSLG, and his curveball has carried a .399 xwOBA with loud contact behind it. Those are the exact pitches that can turn his walk problem into crooked-number damage if Chicago forces him into the zone. Atlanta’s bullpen changes the calculus once the game leaves his hands. The Braves’ relief group has been one of the best units on the board, sitting near the top of recent bullpen power snapshots with only 7 1/3 innings over the previous week and a 2.46 ERA in that stretch. Cubs full-game team total over 4.5 has a path, Braves team total over 3.5 has a real offensive case, and the full-game over 8.5 has warm-weather appeal. The sharper expression isolates Ritchie before Atlanta can shorten the game.

The best bet is Cubs F5 team total over 2.5 (+105). Chicago’s recent freeze adds risk, and Ritchie has already shown he can scatter walks for five innings when opponents fail to deliver the finishing swing. At plus money, the matchup still offers enough value: a patient, high-OBP Cubs top half against a rookie with a 16.0% walk rate, shaky secondary-command profile and real damage allowed on the changeup and curveball. The failure path is traffic without payoff — two walks, a long at-bat, and a stranded inning that lets Ritchie wriggle through five — but one clean Suzuki/Happ/Ballesteros swing can cash this before Atlanta’s bullpen flips the matchup.

Pick: Cubs F5 team total over 2.5 (+105). Final score projection: Braves 5, Cubs 4.

Best bet: Cubs F5 TT o2.5 (+105) at Braves
