Keagan Smith gives you a preview, prediction and pick for today’s game between the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday’s MLB slate.
On Wednesday’s MLB slate, the Seattle Mariners are out to protect their AL West lead with an out-of-division matchup against the Baltimore Orioles. The latter has underperformed thus far and continues to struggle in building momentum, but you know how it is in the American League this season — anything can happen on any given night.
Here’s a betting prediction and pick for tonight’s Mariners vs. Orioles matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.

In recent weeks, the Mariners have begun looking like a contender to come out of the AL once again. Since May 1, they rank ninth in winning percentage and have pushed their overall record to 36-32 and run differential to +33 following an abysmal start to the campaign. Riding the pitching staff was the key to success for much of the year so far, but the bats have become far more productive. While they average only 4.26 runs per game, they’ve moved to 13th in OPS at .718. They slash .238/.319/.399 and get the better of their splits against RHP Brandon Young today. The M’s have a .759 OPS against right-handers this season with a .250/.332/.427 slash, knocking 65 of their 87 homers in the split as well. Overall, they have a .161 ISO that’s good for eighth in the MLB while their homer tally sits fifth.
They’ll start RHP George Kirby this evening, who’s 5-5 in his 13 starts with a 4.04 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. He’s delivered great value with his fastball and has an 89th-percentile grade in chase rate, BB% and ground ball rate, also limiting barrels nicely. However, his K% is just 19.8%, which puts it in the 33rd percentile with 64 Ks in 78.0 IP. Kirby had something of a rough May with a 4.97 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 29.0 IP, and he allowed nine hits with four earned runs in his most recent start, which came against the New York Mets. He’s backed by a bullpen that ranks fifth in ERA at 3.20 despite a 3.62 FIP, also logging a 1.32 WHIP and 13.3% K-BB%.
The Orioles may have their work cut out for them today. They’re just 31-37 on the year with a run differential of -35, though it’s worth noting they have a 19-17 record at home, where they’ll play tonight. The O’s actually produce 4.66 runs per game and 4.97 when at their own ballpark, but that may decline with OPS leader Adley Rutschman likely sidelined again due to injury. The club’s .714 OPS is identical to the Mariners’ with that coming on a slash line of .240/.321/.397. Baltimore’s splits are also better against righties like Kirby, slashing .245/.327/410 with 55 of the 78 homers on them. The overall ISO comes in at .157, also similar to Seattle’s, though a 23.4% K% ranks sixth highest in the sport and is a bit of a negative even with a respectable 0.43 BB/K ratio.
RHP Brandon Young takes the mound for Baltimore today, bringing a 4-1 record across nine outings. He’s amassed a nice 3.47 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and 37 punchouts in 49.1 IP. He’s overperformed in terms of xERA and xBA and doesn’t have many underlying metrics above league average, but he does bring an elite chase rate in the 91st percentile. The bullpen behind him sits all the way at 24th in ERA with a 4.65 mark to complement a 1.35 WHIP and 13.0% K-BB%.
DraftKings Sportsbook lists both teams with -110 odds on the Moneyline in Baltimore tonight, though the Mariners are favored on the run line. The total sits at nine combined runs between these two clubs.
The M’s are pretty clearly the better team here, and while both offenses have been hot lately with top-eight OPS marks over the last two weeks, I’m banking on Seattle’s pitching winning out. The loss of Rutschman for another game spells trouble for the O’s with the catcher hitting .267 with an .832 OPS, and their pitching staff does leave much to be desired once the starter exits the game. This may be close through the early innings if Kirby can hold it together — even in a down year, he’s capable — but I fully expect the Mariners to blow this one open in the later stages thanks to the differences between relief staffs.
