Several major characters were just killed in The Boys. Here’s a breakdown of Season 5 Episode 7, and what it means for the show going forward.
To the surprise of absolutely no one, plenty went down this week on The Boys. Wednesday’s penultimate episode saw more high-octane action, shocking reveals, and (as always) a few gory murders.
Let’s break down every major death and plot development for season five’s seventh installment, titled “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk”.
(Warning: Spoilers for The Boys Season 5, Episode 7 ahead.)
The power has truly gone to Homelander’s head at this point. He’s kicking back and relaxing in the Oval Office, handing out orders to make his church the official religion of America, ban nut milk, and disband Congress. On that last note, the usually feeble President Calhoun expresses some trepidation. In response, a disappointed Homelander crushes his skull, with terrified vice president Ashley watching.
Elsewhere, Mother’s Milk and Starlight check in with Gen V’s Marie and Jordan. The pair give The Boys information on Oh Father’s whereabouts ahead of Homelander’s coronation ceremony. Although Marie and Jordan are eager to help, Starlight tells them to run; this isn’t their fight.
Back at The Boys’ compound, Hughie wakes up to the sound of Kimiko screaming. Turns out, Butcher and Frenchie are attempting to give her Soldier Boy’s uranium-enriched powers in the span of two weeks (rather than two decades). It’s an insane plan, but it could tilt the balance of power in favor of the underdogs. Hughie isn’t buying it; following Homelander’s acquisition of V-One, he’s convinced all is lost.
Still, Butcher and Hughie head to Los Angeles, where they try to pin down Oh Father. However, they’re caught and knocked cold by bodyguard Synapse, a psychic that was previously locked up for murder. For some reason, Homelander has assembled a team of all-powerful (and murderous) psychic henchman.
In New York, Homelander announces he’s abolishing The Seven. It’s a move that catches Deep by surprise. Keep in mind, the aquatic villain is fresh off of killing his best friend turned enemy, Black Noir, during last week’s episode. To make matters worse, a trip to the water turns sad for the now-unemployed supe. A pissed-off hammerhead shark (voiced by the Samuel L. Jackson) tells him that the fish community hasn’t forgotten about Vought’s Alaska pipeline spill from episode six. If The Deep steps foot in any body of water, the marine community will exact some revenge. To make matters worse, a man then begins to drown at the beach. Instead of helping, Deep slinks away in fear as onlookers beg for his help.
Meanwhile, an eager Homelander displays his plans for a massive amusement park, named Homeland, to Soldier Boy. However, his dad doesn’t seem too receptive. That’s despite the old man essentially handing over the V-One in episode seven. Soldier Boy has other plans, seeking to party in Colombia rather than stick around in the USA. This is a crushing blow for Homelander, someone who has always sought the approval of his father. When Soldier Boy tells him “Good luck son”, Homelander snaps. He puts the veteran supe in a sleeper hold, unable to ever let him go. Soldier Boy is then placed back inside a Vought cryogenic chamber, located inside Homelander’s office.
Back at The Boys HQ, a sweet talk between Frenchie and Kimiko turns terrifying when the latter starts to collapse. Radiation testing has clearly taken its toll on the supe. Fortunately, the smartest person on Earth is a room away. At full strength, Sister Sage is more than capable of helping The Boys. Unfortunately, she’s lost all hope following last week’s events; the former Seven member is intentionally dumbing herself down and binging Love Island. Frenchie manages to snap Sage out of it, thanks to a heartening speech about his love for Kimiko.
At Vought Studios, Oh Father runs a disturbing screening of Homelander’s newest promotional video for the Democratic Church of America. Just six of the 30 in attendance come away as “true believers” of the DCA. As a result, the entire room is slated for a mass execution by Homelander’s goons. However, prior to wiping out the entire room, MM and Starlight manage to save most of those in attendance. Afterwards, they link back up with Marie and ask for her help.
Behind the scenes in Hollywood, Butcher and Hughie remain stuck in captivity. There, Synapse (appearing in the form of Joe Kessler) reads the two like an open book. It doesn’t take long for him to figure out where Frenchie, Kimiko and Sage are located. However, Hughie manages to distract the psychic with grizzly images of his familicide. While Synapse is distracted, Butcher splits him open in two with his tentacles.
The bad news? Homelander now knows where the other three are located. He quickly flies to The Boys’ headquarters, targeting former ally Sister Sage in particular. Before Homelander can find the rest of the team, Frenchie baits him into stepping inside Kimiko’s testing room. Instead of giving up the love of his life, Frenchie flips a switch and exposes both men to uranium, forcing a dejected Homelander to fly away. However, this slowly drains the life out of Frenchie, who passes away in front of his friends.
Only one hour is left for The Boys, and we still have so many unanswered questions. How will our heroes manage to stop Homelander? Will The Boys release the Godolkin virus, ushering in a supe plague? The fate of several supporting characters, such as Ashley, Ryan and Soldier Boy, remains uncertain.
That’s only scratching the surface ahead of next week’s episode. Ultimately, the heart of this story has always been Butcher vs. Homelander. A final confrontation between these mortal enemies feels like the finale every fan has been waiting for. With that being said, The Boys has never been shy about subverting expectations. One thing is for certain: Wednesday’s series finale will be appointment viewing.
President Calhoun was killed by Homelander inside the Oval Office. Synapse, a psychic supe, is split in two by Butcher. Frenchie, in order to protect Kimiko and Sister Sage from Homelander, dies from exposure to uranium.
Episode eight, the series finale of The Boys, will come out on Wednesday morning, May 20th, at 3 am ET/12 am PT.
Season 5 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Seasons 1 through 4 are also on Prime Video if you are looking to catch up.
Season five’s eight episode installment will be the final season of The Boys.
