Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves prediction, pick for MLB...
Dan Johnson · 2026-05-21 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves.

Atlanta and Miami stay under the closed roof at loanDepot Park with the Braves carrying first-place authority into a game that should test how much of the Marlins’ recent offensive pulse is real. Atlanta is 33-16, sitting atop the NL East, and Tuesday’s response game had the feel of a team getting its voltage back: Ronald Acuña Jr. (OF) returned to the leadoff spot, Matt Olson (1B) controlled the middle, and Michael Harris II (OF) gave the lineup another left-handed jolt. Miami is 22-27 and dangerous enough to complicate a sleepy favorite script, but this is a different assignment than simply catching a mid-rotation lefty on the right night. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Marlins vs. Braves prediction, preview

Chris Sale (LHP) is the reason Atlanta can be trusted to create separation without needing the game to turn into a hitting contest. He enters at 6-3 with a 1.96 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 64 strikeouts, and he has allowed more than one earned run in only two of nine starts. His last five starts have been even sharper: 3-2, 1.09 ERA and 42 strikeouts, with the contact profile matching the run prevention. Sale is allowing just 86.8 mph average exit velocity, a 31.6% hard-hit rate, .253 wOBA, .280 xwOBA and a 7.5% barrel rate. Janson Junk (RHP) is more stable underneath than his worst box scores suggest, sitting at 2-4 with a 4.14 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, .311 xwOBA allowed and only a 6.6% barrel rate, but Tampa Bay just reached him for seven runs, 10 hits, three walks and six extra-base hits over 5 2/3 innings. Against Atlanta, baserunner traffic does not have to stay polite for long.

The Braves’ lineup has enough force at the top to cover for a thinner bottom. Drake Baldwin’s 13 homers, 160 wRC+ and 2.2 fWAR being on the IL is a real drag, especially with Sean Murphy already unavailable and the lower third now built around José Azócar, Sandy León and Ha-Seong Kim. That makes Atlanta’s team total a little less comfortable than the matchup first suggests. The first six still create the game’s best scoring pocket. Acuña doubled, walked twice and scored three runs immediately after returning from the hamstring IL. Olson has 14 homers, 41 RBI, a .310 ISO, .408 wOBA, 161 wRC+, 93.6 mph average exit velocity, 51.1% hard-hit rate and a 17.0% barrel rate, then followed with two hits, two walks and three RBI on Tuesday. Harris adds nine homers, a .203 ISO, .355 wOBA and 125 wRC+, plus a 421-foot shot in the previous game. Even with Ozzie Albies (2B) and Austin Riley (3B) running uneven current form, Atlanta’s season-long .782 OPS against right-handed pitching gives Junk a difficult first two trips through the order.

The Marlins have hit .264/.357/.554 with a .911 OPS, nine homers, 17 extra-base hits and 17 walks over their last 10 games against left-handed pitching. Xavier Edwards (SS/2B) has a .319/.401/.495 line, .397 wOBA, 153 wRC+, six homers and six steals, and his recent lefty split has been ridiculous: 5-for-11 with four homers and a 2.084 OPS. Otto Lopez (2B/OF) is at .346/.377/.497 with a .384 wOBA, 144 wRC+, four homers and eight steals, and he is 10-for-15 with three doubles and a 1.554 OPS in that same recent lefty window. Kyle Stowers (OF), Connor Norby (IF) and Christopher Morel (OF/IF) give Miami enough right-handed or power-leaning resistance to punish one mistake. Sale’s profile is the answer. The closed roof strips out cheap carry, and his 31.6% hard-hit rate allowed forces Miami to turn that lefty-split heater into actual barrel-to-gap precision against one of the toughest arms on the slate.

Braves vs. Marlins pick, best bet

That is why the board points to Braves -1.5 at -114 instead of the bloated moneyline or a thinner offensive derivative. Atlanta ML -198 asks for too much tax on the road. Braves team total over 4.5 at +105 has Acuña, Olson and Harris behind it, but the fifth run leans heavily on the top six because the Azócar-León-Kim pocket can end innings quickly. F5 Braves -0.5 at -130 captures the Sale/Junk gap, though it leaves behind Miami’s middle-relief exposure after Calvin Faucher threw 33 pitches, Anthony Bender 22, Andrew Nardi 20 and other bridge arms worked through a busy stretch. Marlins team total under 2.5 has Sale’s dominance behind it, but Miami’s recent lefty damage makes that a narrow, uncomfortable lane. The run line lets Sale do the heaviest lifting while Atlanta’s first six and Miami’s bullpen condition supply the margin.

The ticket gets uncomfortable if Junk keeps Olson from batting with traffic, Edwards and Lopez carry the lefty-split surge into early baserunners, and Sale has to grind through long innings instead of handing Atlanta a controlled game. The fuller read still favors the Braves by separation. Sale brings the game’s best stabilizer, Atlanta owns the stronger top-half damage, and Miami’s bullpen has enough recent workload stress to make a late two-run gap more attainable than the moneyline implies.

Best bet: Braves -1.5 (-114). Playable to -125. Final score projection: Braves 5, Marlins 2.

Best bet: Braves -1.5 (-115) at Marlins
