Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs.
Busch Stadium owns the final word on a charged weekend in the National League Central. Chicago enters Sunday night at 32-27, holding second place by one-half game over 30-26 St. Louis. The Cardinals won Friday, 6-5, after Nelson Velázquez, Iván Herrera and Thomas Saggese each homered. The Cubs answered Saturday with a 6-1 victory behind Ben Brown and Pete Crow-Armstrong’s four-hit breakout. Chicago has begun escaping a miserable late-May collapse. St. Louis has lost five of six while trying to stay close to first-place Milwaukee. A Cardinals win takes the series and pushes them past the Cubs in the standings. The national stage finds two rivals with a season’s direction suddenly compressed into one Sunday evening. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Jordan Wicks gives St. Louis the clearest place to apply force. His season debut in Pittsburgh lasted 4 1/3 innings, with eight earned runs and nine hits allowed. His Triple-A lead-in offered little comfort: a 4.44 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 20 strikeouts against 12 walks. The contact in his major-league return was punished with a .477 wOBA, .373 xwOBA, 91.0 mph average exit velocity, 47.1% hard-hit rate and 11.8% barrel rate. Matthew Liberatore brings more stability for St. Louis, with 53 strikeouts across 56 2/3 innings. His own contact profile creates unease: a 4.76 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 10 home runs allowed, .362 xwOBA, 91.5 mph exit velocity and 43.9% hard-hit rate. This game begins with pitching exposure on both sides, with Wicks offering the deeper opening.
Jordan Walker is the hitter built to widen it. The Cardinals right fielder enters batting .290/.359/.557 with 15 home runs, 42 RBI and seven stolen bases. His impact quality has grown into star-level authority: a 94.4 mph average exit velocity, 52.6% hard-hit rate, 14.9% barrel rate, .397 wOBA and .382 xwOBA. Against left-handed pitching, Walker has slugged .521 with four home runs in 54 plate appearances. The projected St. Louis order places Herrera ahead of him and Velázquez behind him. Herrera owns a .386 on-base percentage and has carried heavy damage against left-handers, then homered off Shota Imanaga on Friday. Velázquez arrived from Triple-A, batted cleanup against that left-hander and drove his first Cardinals pitch into the seats for a three-run homer. Masyn Winn adds a .304 average against lefties, giving the order another right-handed contact bat after its power pocket.
Chicago has enough offense to turn this into a difficult night for any Cardinals side. Ian Happ carries 13 home runs, 31 RBI and a .478 slugging percentage, with Friday’s three-run homer extending his own recent awakening. Crow-Armstrong went 4-for-5 Saturday with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs, delivering the loudest answer to his prolonged slump. His 91.3 mph average exit velocity and 49.0% hard-hit rate give that performance underlying weight. Michael Busch has reached base at a .368 clip with 35 RBI, a .354 xwOBA and a 12.5% barrel rate. Alex Bregman and Seiya Suzuki supply experienced right-handed swings against Liberatore. The Cubs have scored 11 runs on 23 hits through two games in St. Louis. Liberatore’s hard-contact allowance and a Cardinals bullpen stretched across the series make Chicago a dangerous scoring opponent throughout the evening.
The market choice should follow the most direct scoring pressure. Chicago’s bats keep the full-game over alive, while Wicks creates the cleaner five-run path for St. Louis. The Cardinals’ projected lineup can send Herrera, Walker and Velázquez against him in the opening inning, then reach the same damage pocket again before a short outing ends. A full-game team total preserves later plate appearances for Walker and Herrera while reaching Chicago’s middle-relief innings. The Cubs bullpen entered the weekend with several reliable arms, although Wicks may force it to cover substantial distance. St. Louis already scored six Friday with this same left-handed matchup structure. Five home runs are unnecessary here; traffic ahead of Walker and one extra-base inning can carry most of the demand.
The clearest danger is Wicks finding early changeup command while Chicago’s rested late arms limit the extension. St. Louis’ recent quiet stretch also leaves some inning-conversion risk. The matchup still points firmly toward the Cardinals reaching five. Wicks has supplied neither major-league stability nor contact suppression, and the heart of St. Louis’ expected order matches his exposure with right-handed patience and force. Walker owns the game’s defining swing. Herrera supplies the traffic. Velázquez adds immediate protection. Sunday night gives that group enough plate appearances to punish Chicago’s most vulnerable arm.
Best Bet: Cardinals team total over 4.5 runs (+125)
Projected score: Cardinals 6, Cubs 4
