Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord Episode 5 and 6 recap
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
The Empire has arrived on Janix and it’s bad for ALMOST everyone. Devon and Master Eeko-Dio Daki run into what Obi-Wan once called Imperial entanglements, and are basically trapped on the planet. The police force has been overtaken by the Empire and Chief Klyce is interrogated and then (ominiously) “permanently reassigned.” And Lawson is taken in for interrogation before, surprisingly, being allowed to go. But one person who sees opportunity is Maul. He is still determined to make Devon his apprentice, even if Rook Kast and her Mandalorian mercenaries want no part of a fight with the Empire.
After Devon and Master Daki are forced to fight their way out of the subway, they need a place to hide with relatively few contacts on the planet. But Daki says they need just one — Lawson. So they go to his home and are hidden by his son Rylee, adding more stress to what’s already been a difficult day. Of course, the Inquisitor Marrok is part of the Imperial forces sent to Janix, and he tracks the two Jedi to Lawson’s residence, ending his reluctance to help them. Daki tells Devon to help the Lawsons in their escape while he fights off Marrok, who winds up setting the Lawson residence on fire.
After evading the Empire in an aerial firefighter, Lawson brings his son and the Jedi to the only place he thinks can get them safely off Janix — Rheena Sul’s nightclub in Section 5. Despite being less than pleased with their arrival, she says she will see what she can do to get them offworld. It turns out she and Lawson saved each other’s lives in an incident on Catalor.
Of course, their respite is brief, as Imperial forces arrive with Marrok and Daki sends Devon and Rylee off while he and Captain Lawson try to fight off the Imperial forces, with Daki assuring Lawson that his padawan is well trained. Eventually the younger duo escapes to a subway terminal, where they are confronted by Marrok. He and Devon duel on the train, with Marrok eventually getting the upper hand and demanding to know where Maul is. At that moment, Maul arrives and engages the inquisitor in a fierce duel. Eventually, Devon joins in, aiding Maul. The duo is eventually able to fight Marrok onto a separate car and Izara severs the connection between the two cars. Devon turns to Maul prepared to fight, but he deactivates his lightsaber and tells her that she has now seen the face of her true enemy.
We end on a scene of Marrok contacting someone (Vader, perhaps?) to inform them that Maul lives and he is more dangerous than they suspected. And he is in league with two Jedi. The episode ends before he is told how to proceed.
