Cincinnati Reds vs. Colorado Rockies prediction, pick for...
Dan Johnson · 2026-04-30 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Colorado Rockies.

Great American Ball Park hosts the second game of this set with Cincinnati 19-10 and carrying an eight-wins-in-10 stretch, while Colorado 13-17 continues to toggle between brief offensive bursts and quieter road stretches. The Reds took the opener 7-2 behind early damage and steady lineup pressure, and they’ve consistently played from in front during this run, scoring at least five runs in seven of their last 10. Colorado, meanwhile, has shown flashes at the plate—particularly from the top half—but remains just 6-11 on the road, where sequencing has been less reliable. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Colorado Rockies.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Reds vs. Rockies prediction, preview

The starting matchup brings two very different surface lines with similar underlying questions. Tomoyuki Sugano’s 3.42 ERA suggests stability, but the contact profile underneath it is loud: a 46.4% hard-hit rate, 15.5% barrel rate, and .383 xwOBA with a .557 expected slugging mark. Those are indicators of damage that has not fully materialized yet. Brandon Williamson’s results have been less forgiving—5.40 ERA with a 6.90+ xERA and .400+ xwOBA—and he has failed to complete five innings in three of five outings, forcing earlier bullpen exposure. Cincinnati is averaging just over five runs per game across its last 10, while Colorado has still produced 252 hits and 120 runs through 30 games, even with its uneven road output.

The lineup layer is where the pressure builds on both sides. Elly De La Cruz continues to operate as a game-breaker at .291/.362/.590 with 10 HR, 24 RBI, 26 runs, and eight steals, and he opened this series with a 3-for-4, HR, four-RBI, two-steal performance. Sal Stewart adds middle-order thump and patience at .290/.381/.598 with nine HR and 29 RBI, while Matt McLain’s 18 walks keep traffic moving ahead of that power. Nathaniel Lowe and Spencer Steer extend the damage profile—Steer already left the yard in the first inning Tuesday. Colorado’s top end can answer. Edouard Julien is setting the table at .308/.393/.449 with an .842 OPS and just delivered a three-hit, two-RBI game with a home run, while Mickey Moniak has surged to .310/.344/.655 with eight HR and a .999 OPS. Hunter Goodman (.250/.324/.520, seven HR) and Troy Johnston (.315/.373/.457) give the Rockies enough middle-order presence to convert traffic when it appears.

Rockies vs. Reds pick, best bet

There is a version of this game where the run scoring settles down. Sugano has kept his ERA intact through five starts, and Colorado’s road offense has been prone to flattening out when it does not string hits together. A total sitting at 9.5 also reflects the park and the volatility already baked into these pitching profiles. But the counterweight to that case is how consistently the expected-contact indicators point in the same direction for both starters. Sugano’s combination of barrel rate and expected slugging is typically paired with higher run output over time, and Williamson’s inability to suppress contact or work deep into games places sustained pressure on Cincinnati’s opponent-facing pitching group.

Once the market layer comes into focus, the construction becomes clearer. The first-five window is heavily taxed—over 4.5 at -195 and over 5.5 at -125—which compresses value into a shorter stretch that depends on immediate conversion. A Cincinnati team total over 4.5 isolates one side of the matchup, even though Colorado’s top-of-order production and recent form create viable scoring paths of its own. Extending the lens across the full nine innings captures both starting profiles and the additional volatility introduced once the bullpens are involved, particularly in a park where contact tends to carry.

Best Bet: Over 9.5 (+100) There are enough independent scoring paths on both sides for this to play beyond a one-lineup script. The failure case is sequencing—hard contact turning into outs or traffic left stranded—but the volume and quality of contact expected here create multiple routes to a double-digit total.

Projected score: Reds 6, Rockies 5

Best bet: Reds vs. Rockies o9.5 total runs (+100)
