Alex Hunter previews the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial CC and gives his picks for your DraftKings fantasy golf lineups.
For the second straight event in Texas, the PGA TOUR is hosting the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club (par 70, 7,289 yards, bentgrass greens) in Fort Worth. Colonial has hosted this tournament since it was added to the PGA TOUR schedule in 1946. Ben Griffin (-12) won the Charles Schwab Challenge last year by one shot. This week’s field consists of 133 players and there will be a top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds.
Below, I dive into three of my favorite DFS options on DraftKings for the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Smalley is playing the best golf of his career right now. The Duke product has only missed one cut in 14 starts this season and he has finished inside the top-25 at six straight tournaments. His last three starts read a T-7 at the Cadillac Championship, a T-14 at the Truist Championship and a runner-up at the PGA Championship, which is the best outing of his career. Smalley gained strokes in every major category at the demanding Aronimink and he has shot under par in 16 of his last 20 rounds.
Smalley has vaulted himself up 81 spots in the world golf rankings this season to a career-best No. 41. Smalley has been solid at Colonial, finishing T-27, T-40 and MC, but he is a completely different class of player nowadays and has the skills to contend at this par 70. Four of the last five winners at Colonial have finished the event top-12 in both SG APP and SGP, and Smalley ranks top-35 in both categories this season. Also, for five years in a row, the winner at Colonial has finished the week top-seven in par four performance and Smalley ranks seventh in the metric this season. Smalley should stay hot at Colonial and he is one of the top spends of the week.
Bezuidenhout shouldn’t be popular after missing the cut at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson last week and he should rebound with a strong performance. Bezuidenhout only missed the cut by one shot at TPC Craig Ranch and he had made 10 of his first 12 cuts of the season before this. Bezuidenhout has finished inside the top-30 five times this season, most recently with a T-6 at the Myrtle Beach Classic earlier this month.
Bezuidenhout ranks sixth in SGP this season and Colonial is a perfect venue for him to get back on track. Since missing the cut in his first attempt at Colonial, Bezuidenhout has finished T-15, T-21, T-17 and T-16 in his last four visits to the Texas track. Among this field, Bezuidenhout ranks seventh in strokes per round at Colonial and 10th in strokes gained per round at Texas courses.
Clanton is starting to find his form and is worth rostering at this cheap salary. The former top-ranked amateur in the world has made six of his last seven cuts and he is on the heels of a T-31 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson last week. Clanton shot 67 or lower in 3-of-4 rounds at TPC Craig Ranch. Plus, he gained strokes on approach and on the greens for the first time this season.
Ranking 21st in SG APP, Clanton has been dialed with his irons all year, but his putter has let him down, ranking 161st in SGP, so seeing him gaining strokes with his flat stick at TPC Craig Ranch was very encouraging. Being in strong form with both your irons and putter is essential at Colonial, and Clanton has top-30 upside this week, despite this being his debut at the Texas venue.
