Let’s dive into my favorite bet for this match.
This is a massive match for both countries. Canada had never reached the knockout stage of a men’s World Cup before this tournament, while South Africa had never advanced past the group stage before its dramatic win over South Korea. Now, one of these teams will move into the Round of 16 for the first time. The winner will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the next round, so this is not just a ceremonial knockout appearance. Canada and South Africa both have a real chance to extend a historic run, especially with the expanded format creating a more open section of the bracket.
Canada’s group stage was uneven, but it was still a major step forward. The Canadians opened with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, earning their first-ever point at a senior men’s World Cup. They followed that with a 6-0 win over Qatar, which was their first-ever World Cup victory and one of the most complete attacking performances of the group stage.

That loss probably cost them a more comfortable home-field setup, but it did not change the bigger picture: this team has created chances in all three matches.

They came into the final matchday sitting fourth in Group A, but a 1-0 upset over South Korea, combined with Mexico beating Czechia, sent them through as the group runner-up. Their win over South Korea was impressive, as South Africa defended with real discipline, stayed compact, and found the decisive moment through Thapelo Maseko. It was not a fluke in terms of effort or organization, and Hugo Broos deserves credit for getting his team to respond after a rough start to the tournament.
Still, this is a step up in attacking pressure. Canada has more ways to hurt South Africa than South Korea showed in that final group match. Jonathan David, Cyle Larin, Alphonso Davies, and Canada’s wide runners can stretch the game, and that matters against a South Africa side that may again spend long stretches defending without the ball. The betting choice comes down to price. Canada to advance is the safer pick, but the number is too heavy. Canada ML carries the risk of a draw through 90 minutes, but it is also the better value if we believe the Canadians can turn their attacking volume into a regulation win.
