The Hurricanes took a swing this offseason by acquiring the services of Nikolaj Ehlers, who was supposed to provide additional firepower for the postseason. After all, a lack of many higher-end players was the criticism of this iteration of the Carolina roster in each of the last few postseasons, so the deal certainly made sense. It still does, especially after the veteran notched a career-best 71 points in his first regular season with the team even despite a sluggish start, but Ehlers is yet to find the net in the playoffs thus far. He’s recorded only one point with an assist and missed one game due to injury, but he’s put 10 shots on the goal and sees work on the top power-play unit as well. After shooting 12.6% this year and 11.9% over the course of his career, he’s due for a goal before long if he puts another few pucks on the net.
At some point soon, Jack Eichel is bound to light the lamp again. It’s been a minute or two since his last (and lone) goal in these Stanley Cup Playoffs — which came in Game 3 against the Utah Mammoth back on April 24 — but it’s simply a matter of time until he gets another. The star center has a team-high 18 shots on goal this postseason and has recorded at least three SOG in four of his six games during this run. After he scored 27 goals in 74 regular-season games, roughly one per every three appearances, it feels like he’s bound to score soon. Whether we go off that average or his 10.4% shooting percentage, the numbers indicate that another goal is imminent. The outlook of one is only made better by the matchup against the Ducks, who have allowed 3.50 goals per game during their own playoff run and have Lukas Dostal in net with a paltry .874 SV% and 3.87 GAA. It’s far from an ideal start to the netminder’s postseason career, but Eichel is very experienced and can capitalize tonight.
