The Diamondbacks halted the Twins’ four-game win streak on Friday, winning the inter-league matchup 9-5 at home. This marked the fourth win in five games for Arizona as the team holds second place in the NL West. The Twins are in third place in the AL Central with a much more realistic chance of winning the division title later this season.
Taj Bradley is starting for Minnesota, which was once an excellent day for the team. The 25-year-old had a terrific start to the season, holding a sub-3.00 ERA through most of May. Then the last four games brought on a collapse. Bradley has allowed at least four earned runs in four straight games against the Pirates, White Sox, Tigers and Cardinals. It’s an ugly stretch that includes six home runs and 24 hits in 19.2 innings.
To make matters worse for Minnesota, the Diamondbacks’ offense is hot. They scored nine runs in the first game of this series and scored eight runs in the series finale against the Angels. Both of those games were at home, and so is Saturday’s contest so the hot streak could continue. That said, they were quiet in the first two games of the Angels series and are a below-average offensive team this season.
Zac Gallen is starting for the Diamondbacks, and like Bradley, he began the season with a good stretch of starts. The 30-year-old had a 3.14 ERA at the end of April, but that’s ballooned to a 5.35 ERA entering this game. He’s allowed at least four earned runs in six of nine starts since the May 1. The other three outings were three, three, and two earned runs.
The Twins have a much better offense throughout the season, ranking seventh in total runs scored. Even in Friday’s loss, they scored five runs. Prior to that, they scored nine, 12, four, five, six, and nine. This is a unit that’ll put runs on the board, especially with Gallen struggling to limit damage.
In another universe, Bradley and Gallen are both aces at the same time. They’ve showcased that ability for stretches, but it hasn’t been the case recently. With two struggling pitchers and two hot offenses, I’m taking the over at nine runs.
