A good old fashion bottom of the NL East matchup. Despite the poor starts, neither squad was supposed to struggle this much. The Mets have the highest total payroll in the majors, and the Marlins outperformed expectations in 2025. Now they’re the bottom two teams in the NL East.

New York ended a five-game losing streak on Wednesday, defeating the Reds. It was the Mets’ second win in nine games. Meanwhile, the Marlins have lost two straight following a four-game win streak. Both teams have solid starters on the mound for the opener.

Freddy Peralta is starting for the Mets, making his second consecutive start against Miami. He allowed four earned runs and eight hits while striking out nine in 7.0 innings. The start’s length was positive, as were the strikeouts, but allowing four earned and eight hits aren’t good. A second game against this lineup could be even worse or shorter, or both.

Max Meyer is starting for the Marlins. His last outing was also against the Mets, and he allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings. Like Peralta, it seems unlikely that he can replicate that performance. That said, he’s pitched two consecutive scoreless outings (7.0 innings vs. the Mets and 6.0 innings vs. the Braves).
